CHAPTER 28

1976 Markarov - Ararat coach

1976 Ararat - silver medalist of the USSR Championship

1976 Ararat - finalist of the USSR Cup 1976

Team prizes "For the best goal difference": 1976 (spring)

This season is the beginning of the coaching biography of the famous striker Eduard Markarov. And, I must say, a very good start: "Ararat" is the silver medalist of the spring championship of the country, the finalist of the USSR Cup ...

Not only the young players of "Ararat" pass the test of strength, hardening by battle, the head coach also passes it. Will his hands drop? I think he will survive, because not even a year has passed since we all admired his inimitable, purely Markarov's ability to score winning goals in the most important matches. Yes, even now he is still there, on the field, and now with his eyes closed he will determine where the partners are. And if they trust him, if young players see him as the idol of their football childhood, then today we can already say that Markarov's coaching debut in the major leagues has taken place.

                                                                                     Sergey Shmitko

The release of "grandfather" (a respectful nickname for Viktor Aleksandrovich Maslov) came as a surprise to many. Sports leaders believed that he was already aged, he could not work with the same energy and offered Markarov to head Ararat. Eduard had a counter-proposal - for a year he worked together with Maslov, and then, having already gained experience, he would single-handedly lead the team. Markarov's proposal did not pass. A significant role in his agreement to accept the team was played by the persuasion of the Ararat team themselves, who promised support to the novice coach. And Markarov, rolling up his sleeves, took on the coaching "collar". First of all, he returned Nikolai Kazaryan to the team, showing the opponents, who have grown like mushrooms, that he is counting on the help of the "old guard". “Veterans must be protected,” Markarov considered. “Who can learn from young people if not from them! "We now have capable young midfielders who can play constructively. Everyone already knows Oganesyan. But he still does not risk taking the game on himself. Independence is a great incentive. Therefore, I think it's time to look for a place in the middle line and young Keropyan - this player has very good data. And in front, in the attack, whether you like it or not, you need to play Andriasyan: he is the sharpest player, very inconvenient for the defenders and the goalkeeper. Without him, of course, our middle line will lose something, but but the young ones will turn around with might and main.

It is impossible to solve the problem of a worthy replacement for veterans who left the team in one year. It takes time to bring them to the main composition. I would especially like to mention Parsadanyan, Sahakyan, Khalajyan and Keropyan.

Like many years, the gates will be protected by Abrahamyan and Demirchyan. We also took a young goalkeeper Hovsepyan from the Polytechnic team. The line of defense has not changed. Young Parsadanyan and Azaryan will play alongside the experienced Gevorkyan, Sarkisyan, Mirzoyan, Mesropyan and Martirosyan. The midfield line looks more stable today. Andriasyan, Oganesyan, Bondarenko, N. Petrosyan, Minasyan, Sahakyan and Sergei Davidov (former Baku resident), who joined us from Chornomorets, are represented here. Things are more difficult with the acquisition of the line of attack. Who will be the partners of Kazaryan and S. Petrosyan, time will tell.

The team held the first stage of training sessions in Eshery, near Sukhumi. We are satisfied with the results. But the second stage was not entirely pleasant for us. Due to bad weather and unprepared fields, we lost ten days of work. I had to return to Yerevan ahead of time and conduct my training in Artashat, where all the necessary conditions have been created to prepare for the pionat. We are preparing for the new season with undoubtedly greater loads than last year. The volume of training sessions has increased, discipline has become stricter. We don't want to play the way we played last season. We only want to play beautiful football. After all, every match is a kind of performance.

Before the start of the championship, we will hold several control meetings. On March 27, we will enter the fight for the USSR Cup. The team is determined to fight for this honorary trophy and extend the registration of the Cup in Yerevan. On March 30, a meeting with the USSR national team is planned. And, finally, on April 4, the first calendar match for the national championship with Spartak Moscow.

It was expected that before the match with Spartak during the grand opening of the national championship, Markarov the football player would be seen off. But in a hurry they forgot about it. Markarov reacted philosophically: "All these are the little things of life."

In connection with the difficult international calendar of the USSR national team (European Championship, XXI Olympic Games), the internal calendar was reorganized in its interests. Two separate championships were held - spring (from April 4 to July 13) and autumn (August-November).

The spring championship for "Ararat" started unsuccessfully. First, he lost to Spartak Moscow (0:1), then a draw with CSKA (0:0) followed. Outwardly, Markarov remained calm and willingly talked to reporters: “After the match with Spartak, I was frightened for a moment of meeting with my players. I was afraid to see distrust of me in someone’s eyes. I would have caught the slightest nuance of such distrust! They were sincerely upset. There is nothing good in losing, but I even somehow calmed down, believed even more in the guys and in my own strength.

Today's "Ararat" has a lot of questions. We need to play combinations, look for new attack options. Already now we have begun to do a lot in a new way.

I mean both a thorough medical examination - only during the pre-season preparation it was carried out with us three times - and the abolition of the day off after the control and friendly games, which we now consider as ordinary training sessions, followed by bringing unsuccessful tactical moves the day before to their logical conclusion, and a set of recovery measures after heavy training loads, and self-control, and much more.

We understand that this is only the beginning, but it has already been done. We all participate in the training process together, we comprehend each exercise together, we know in advance what purpose it serves. It's nice to see that the players are consciously doing a huge amount of work. But not so long ago, it was believed that this was not characteristic of Ararat.

Perhaps, some people believe that yesterday's player should not start his coaching career from the position of senior coach of a major league club. There is a reason for this, of course. However, who better than he knows the strengths and weaknesses of his teammates? After all, you can still tell with every nerve cell there, on the field, even with your eyes closed, where the partners are at such and such a moment, what is being done in front, what is behind. You know in what mood the players went to the match, who is working at full strength, and who is underperforming ... You do not have to puzzle over why this or that player acted unsuccessfully. And if, moreover, your personal relationships with the players have been tested over the years, if they trust you, if, finally, you yourself feel that you can be useful to the team, then why not decide one day? I'm still with the players on "you", but they already know: what I could miss yesterday as a football player, today I can't miss as a head coach. In "Ararat" everything is built on friendly principles, but sometimes I have the right, as they say, to bang the table with my fist, but they don't ...

The season is not going to be easy, the autumn championship will be especially difficult. Given its one-round nature and the draw of the fields, all major league teams will undoubtedly make every effort to achieve victory in every match. This autumn championship will be a real test for us."

Today, at a distance of more than a quarter of a century, when the championships of 1976 have already become history, one can only marvel at the insight of Markarov.

Let us return, however, to the spring championship, in which otherworldly forces decided to help Ararat through Nikolay Kazaryan: “I am very grateful to Markarov that he believed in me and persuaded me to return to the team. I have been playing in the team of masters for eleven years, and these years the training of forwards was not much different from the training of defenders and midfielders.Only this year, when "Ararat" began to train Markarov, they began to pay more attention to shots on goal in conditions as close as possible to the game.We forwards often stay to work after training. In the "spring" championship we became silver medalists, and for a long time I was the leader in the dispute of scorers. And this championship began for us with unsuccessful matches in Yerevan with the Moscow teams "Spartak" and CSKA. The third game was in Minsk with local Dynamo. And the day before the match, a woman called me in the hotel room and said that she was a clairvoyant and that tomorrow Ararat would win the match, and I would be the author of the only goal. happened. In the autumn championship we again played in Minsk - so the lot decided. Another call from a mysterious stranger followed. This time she predicted a 2-1 victory for us, and the role of the author of the decisive goal was again given to me. And again she was right! The first goal was scored by Khoren Hovhannisyan. Then the Minskers equalized the score, and just before the final whistle I scored the second ball. So don’t believe after that in otherworldly forces.”

After the Minsk miracle, "Ararat" won several victories and took the lead in the championship. Before the thirteenth round (oh, this “damn dozen”!) “Ararat” was one point ahead of the Moscow “Dinamo” that was chasing it. The leaders were facing a face-to-face duel. In the event of a victory, "Ararat" became the champion "within five minutes", but if the result was a draw, it would continue to lead (two rounds before the finish line).

... The second hand had only two laps to run. Muscovites from the right flank were preparing to take a free kick. The players of both teams accumulated in the Yerevan penalty area. The last chance to print the gates of "Ararat". Evryuzhihin sends the ball to the opposite side of the Yerevan penalty area, Novikov jumps out above all and returns the ball to our goal. And there, Dynamo Shepel takes off towards the ball and sends it with his head into Hovsepyan's goal. A shameful defeat that deprived the team of gold medals.

Summing up the results of the spring championship, Nikita Pavlovich Simonyan noted: “Yerevan Ararat has long been the leader of our championship and was seen by many as its potential winner. However, silver medals are an indisputable success of the club. - such venerable players as Ishtoyan, Zanazanyan, Kovalenko and, finally, Markarov. young coach E. Markarov found a good replacement and prepared the team well both for playing in the championship and in the Cup. technical equipment, a penchant for improvisation. Matches with the participation of "Ararat" invariably look with interest."

In addition to silver medals, "Ararat" became the owner of the prize of the Ukrainian magazine "Start" for the best difference between goals scored and conceded, and the team's captain Arkady Andriasyan was ahead of all the scorers in the dispute (Nikolai Kazaryan was one goal behind him) and won the prize of the editorial office of the newspaper "Trud ".

Success in this championship allowed Eduard Markarov to enter the history of Russian football. He became the first and only local coach who led "Ararat" to the medals of the USSR championship!

The spring championship has passed, the autumn one has begun. "Ararat" successfully advanced to the USSR Cup. On the way to the final, the following teams were replayed: SKA Rostov (1:0), Lokomotiv Moscow (1:0), CSKA (2:1) and Dnepr (2:1). The second finalist was Dinamo Tbilisi, which had never owned the prestigious crystal trophy before.

"Ararat" entered the game in a weakened composition. Broke the thumb of the right hand goalkeeper Abrahamyan. The place at the gate was taken by debutant Avetis Hovsepyan. Having not recovered from the injury, Nikolai Kazaryan was forced to appear on the field in the second half. But the biggest loss for the team was the absence of its badly injured captain and leader Arkady Andriasyan.

In the first minutes of the match, the Ararat team created a sharp moment at the Gogia goal: Nazar Petrosyan sent the ball from the right flank to the opposite edge of the Tbilisi goalkeeper, and Khoren Hovhannisyan actually hit the empty goal, but managed to hit the crossbar. The ball bounced right on Robert Khalaydzhyan, but one of the Tbilisi residents took it. This moment, apparently, broke the youth of "Ararat", and they later failed to resist the experienced Dynamo, who acted brilliantly that day and deservedly won.

The finish of the autumn championship took place in a dramatic struggle, as a result of which Spartak Moscow left the top league, lagging behind only one point behind a group of five teams - Ararat, Dnepr, Zorya, Krylya Sovetov and " Miner".

Summing up the results of the year, Eduard Markarov was frank and self-critical: “Of course, there is no complete satisfaction with the performances of Ararat last season. And it’s not about the places the team took. we would probably take fifth or seventh place. But, I repeat, in the end, I don’t want to evaluate the performance of my team with points and places, but with the quality of its game, its prospects. From this point of view, I am satisfied with something, a lot "Ararat" has greatly rejuvenated, and young players, each individually and collectively, have proven themselves well. But only in those matches when experienced players played next to them. When in the autumn championship they were provided by the se -because our leading players have not played due to injuries and illnesses, it turned out that young people are not yet ready to fight at the highest level. All this makes us now think more about the future than about the past. to find means of strengthening the game of the team as quickly as possible by maturing the youth and acquiring experience.

I confess that I did not even imagine how difficult the transition from players to coaches is. Of course, he understood that it was not easy. But what is so difficult!.. From the player's point of view, all team problems seem to be not so difficult to solve. When you become a coach, then sometimes you are faced with the fact that you don’t know how to approach the solution of a particular issue. I want to emphasize that I do not mean purely methodical points, training plans, tactical issues. Here I didn’t have any difficulties, my great playing experience helped me to build the educational and training process correctly. But in organizational matters, I, as a young coach, frankly, swim. I will probably stop being afraid of them with time. There is one more moment, already purely football, about which you have to think a lot. The fact is that many young players, coming to the team of the major leagues, are not able to cope with high loads as easily as those who have been playing in the team for 5-6 years can cope. This means that it is necessary to prepare even the players of the main squad in different ways. It is not easy, you have to search in this area.

The class of our football has certainly grown, but the leveling of the class of teams in the major leagues is taking place at a certain average level. The general dissatisfaction, in my opinion, is predetermined by the fact that we too rarely see manifestations of the highest football skill in the performance of our masters. Unfortunately, we don't have many high-class players. Therefore, in matches there are almost no bright game episodes, unusual improvisational decisions, subtle and clever combinations that only outstanding masters can create. And since they are not there, then even those games that take place at a good level are not impressive. That is why we sometimes say too harsh words about our football. I think that as soon as outstanding performers appear, we will have no reason to be dissatisfied. Is it possible to make them appear faster? After all, talents are not created artificially, talents are born. But in order for them to open up, so that they are not overlooked, it is necessary to conduct the entire football business in an appropriate way. This is our coaching duty, and organizational efforts should be directed to this."

CHAPTER 29

1976-1977 Head coach of Ararat club

1978-1979 Coach at the Yerevan Republican Football School

Honored Coach of Armenia

An angry shout is the defeat of the teacher. Do not rush to conclusions. I'm only at home, in a warm bath, having calmed down, I can fully understand the causes and consequences of what happened on the field.

                                            Boris Arkadiev

The first person who believed in me was Eduard Markarov. It was he who foreshadowed my success as a team leader.

                                                                                                            Khoren Hovhannisyan

The change of generations in "Ararat" continued next year. And again the team was divided into groups. This time - on the "old men", who began to put themselves above the interests of the team, and "young". It was impossible to put up with "hazing", which is more inherent in the army, but old, friendly relations prevented "surgical intervention". The patience of the Ararat management has run out after three unsuccessful matches at the start of the season. Many years later, to my request to tell about this time, Markarov with sadness in his eyes (then his close friends let him down, with whom he forged the recent victories of Ararat) replied:  "Why stir up the past? I can only say: envy is a very unpleasant thing. Alas, it lives in everyone. My main mistake was that I underestimated the various undercurrents around the team."

Remembering these troubled times of discord, Nikolai Kazaryan admitted:  "Over the years, we have become more calm, reasonable. Those whims that were between us are remembered with a smile, like a bad dream. Now we have the warmest relations with the guys."

A few days after the unsuccessful cup match in Ivano-Frankivsk with the local Spartak, A. Andriasyan, A. Abrahamyan and S. Martirosyan were expelled from the team.

After the excommunication of the leader of the attacks, Andriasyan, Markarov had to rebuild the tactical pattern of the team. Having at his disposal class defenders - Mirzoyan, Sargsyan, Mesropyan, Gevorkyan, he, of course, chose the game from defense. Apparently, the fact that Markarov considered himself a student of Boris Arkadiev, a supporter of defense concepts, who liked to repeat: "Adherents of the priority of attack can shoot from a bow or play skittles, there is only attack and no defense."

Improving the moral climate in the team, a high spirit of winning allowed "Ararat" to improve the situation and after victories over "Wings of the Soviets", "Karpaty", Tbilisi "Dynamo", "Za-rey" enter the leading group of the championship.

...The student summer has come, and we, the fifth-year students of the Yerevan Polytechnic Institute, were sent to Moscow to work on the Olympic construction site. According to the football calendar, we determine when and with whom "Ararat" plays in Moscow: on July 18 - with "Lokomotiv" and on August 26 - with "Dynamo". We are starting to prepare for these matches. They ordered several banners and yellow-green flags (the colors of the then Arara-ta uniform). From Yerevan they took with them two state flags, preserved from last year's decisive match with Moscow "Torpedo".

Before the game with the railroad workers with Artur Kamalyan (the future mayor of Ijevan), we visit the Ararat team, who are located in Cherkizovo. The mood of the guys is upbeat, they are eager to fight. We promise them strong support. Fellow students from the Podolsk construction team and the builders of the Armtsvetmet trust, who were erecting a new building of the USSR Ministry of Non-Ferrous Metallurgy in Moscow (the Olympic Palace was built on the site of the old ministry building on Mira Avenue), should come to our aid. There were about a hundred of us, and this, with the collective "sickness", is a considerable force.

On the outskirts of the Cherkizovsky stadium, the police did not pay attention to our banner - "Ara-rat, slow down the locomotive", but as soon as we settled on the podium, they began to apply pressure. The banner had to be rolled up, and we did not give offense to the Armenian flags, intimidating law enforcement officers with a complaint to the Komsomol Central Committee. Our support for our favorite team, I think, was not out of place. That year, several good soloists played in Loko-Motive (Givi Nodia, Yuri Semin, Valery Gaz-zaev, Vladimir Eshtrekov, Valery Samokhin), and by the day of the match with "Ararat" the team was in third place.Considering this, a draw (1:1) with the railroad could be considered quite decent.

A 24-day break in the calendar allowed "Ararat" to make a tour of the African continent, where he won against the teams of Benin, Ghana and Nigeria. Upon returning home, Markarov, in an interview with Central Television commentator Vladimir Pereturin, said that the pause in the championship was good for Ararat, the leading players had a rest, and the young players had a taste for the game, for attack.

After a confident victory over "Wings", Yerevan unexpectedly lost at home to CSKA (2:3). Prior to this, the capital's army team had not won against Ararat for seventeen years, even at home in Moscow. Around this match, ambiguous rumors still circulate to this day. But be that as it may, the threat of parting with the major league hanging over CSKA was eliminated with the help of these two "dirty" points, which turned out to be saving at the finish of the championship. And instead of CSKA  left the major league Lviv "Karpaty".

Five days after the painful match with the army team, "Ararat" played in Moscow with the leader of the championship and the newly minted owner of the USSR Cup, the capital's "Dynamo". An hour before the match, a bus with Ararat players drove up to the stadium. I managed to exchange a few phrases with Khoren Oganesyan, he confirmed the trick of the "darling of Stalin's son."

Our match with Dynamo began at a fast pace. They played Markarov's part-tour like clockwork. With sharp, swift counterattacks, the Yerevanians kept the defense of the Muscovites in constant tension. Dynamo, although they had some territorial advantage, did not go for an aggravation. And after the teams exchanged goals, calm set in, and the game safely moored to a no-man's harbor. In those moments when the ball did not leave the center of the field, and the stands fell silent, the legendary goalkeeper and photojournalist Alexei Khomich stepped into action. He, like a real showman, in order to maintain the football tone in the stands and provoke the Armenian fans, smiling broadly, sent insulting signs towards the temperamental southerners. The stands instantly came to life, hooting was heard in response, and Khomich, having completed the task, returned to his post through the gate.

... The eleventh place of the team could not satisfy Markarov, and like a true maestro, he decided to leave with his head held high. A few years later, in a conversation with reporters, Eduard Artemovich regretfully admitted: “They weren’t going to shoot me. At least there was not even a hint of it. But since things didn’t go well, and I’m a head coach, it means that I’m responsible for everything. Now, from the height of my years, having gained life experience, I can say that I still had to stay in the team and prove my case by deeds. I had to ... "

Galich has wonderful lines: "Do not be afraid of prison, do not be afraid of the scrip, do not be afraid of pestilence and famine, But only be afraid of the one who says:" I know how to do it!

A new management has come to Ararat. Robert Tsagikyan again became the head of the team, and Nikolai Gulyaev was invited to the position of head coach from Moscow. What experiments they put on the team - only God knows, but the fact that "Ararat" in 1978 miraculously retained a residence permit in the major leagues. Already in the course of the championship, when the team suffered one defeat after another.

... Throughout 1978 and the beginning of the next year, Markarov was engaged in the education of young football players in the republican sports boarding school. He analyzed this period of his activity in the article "Teams are leaving ...", published in the weekly "Football-Hockey": "Only now, three years later, I understand how difficult it is: to finish playing on the field and immediately become a senior coach of a major league team. Of course, it would have been better to work as an assistant to an experienced specialist, but then, in early 1976, it seemed to me that I could continue what Viktor Alexandrovich Maslov started. And he started with the rejuvenation of Ararat, but believed that this should be done gradually, while maintaining good places in the table.

At first it seemed like we were doing really well. In a noticeably updated composition, "Ararat" in the spring of 1976 took second place. But already in the autumn we faced unforeseen difficulties. Some experienced players, who were supposed to help coaches in working with youth, help by example and thereby help preserve the traditions of the team, began, as they say, to evade training.

The 1977 season went head over heels for us, there was no longer any talk of continuity, gradual rejuvenation, all efforts were thrown at keeping a place in the major leagues. Ararat had to do the same this year, although the new coaches returned the players who had finished playing to the roster. Again, "Ararat" was engaged only in the struggle for the right to stay in the major leagues, and although he succeeded, all the indicators in the tournament were even worse than a year ago. However, the most unpleasant, in my opinion, was the fact that some young players stopped growing, some of them disappeared from the horizon altogether.

After such a short introduction, I want to explain what caused these notes. I think that everyone who loves football cannot but be worried that from time to time our major league loses teams that sometimes set the tone, were both strong and original. But only for a short period of time. Then, for various reasons, they slipped to the bottom of the standings, lost a game, and our football lost, and for a long time, teams that were so necessary for it to grow and progress, capable of fighting for high places.

Yes, the reasons were different each time, but the basis was the inability or unwillingness to think about the future. More than ten years ago, a similar thing happened to Neftchi, the bronze medalist of the 1966 national championship. Then, after a long and difficult ascent, the "Dawn" also set. She became a champion, but lost her coach and two leading players. Since then, “Zorya” has become an ordinary team, without pretensions to good results. Now the same thing happened with Ararat.

I will not take the liberty of analyzing all the processes taking place in other teams and even in Ararat, which is closest to me. Let me just say that it takes five or six years for a team to form before it reaches its peak. But everything can collapse very quickly, in two or three years. It happens that even in a year what has been accumulated for a long time and with difficulty is lost. How to prevent this? Here it is impossible to say about everything that needs to be done to maintain combat-ready teams during the period of generational change. Let me dwell only on how, in my opinion, one should take care of the shift.

Last season, I worked with coach Vazgen Hayrapetyan with a team of 16-17 year olds in the Yerevan Sports and Youth Sports School. Our team, under the flag of the national team of the republic (I note that we looked at a large group of candidates) competed in the All-Union Spartakiad for schoolchildren and took third place. Next season, our players, having matured a year, will take part in the national youth championship, for which we are already starting preparations.

So I think that Ararat's coaches should have paid attention to the young men this year (not to mention next season), to look closely at them. The connection between the team of masters and our school is, at best, one-sided. If you offer to look at the player, they will look, maybe they will even accept him in reserve, but it doesn’t come to painstaking work with him. graduate from school and must decide their fate. Six of them, according to the coaches, have such abilities that they simply need to improve their skills in a team of masters. However, in “Ararat” no one seriously works with a double (let alone talking about a double, if the team spent more than half of the season without a full-fledged coaching staff), and, naturally, the coaches of the Sports and Youth Sports School have concerns: whether their many years of work will be wasted and the work of the boys themselves, especially since over the years considerable funds have been spent on their upbringing and education.

Last year, 18-year-old S. Zakaryan took to the field for 15-20 minutes in the first team. This year he was supposed to reveal himself for real, but the incorrectly dosed training loads that he received in preparation for the season in doubles led to the fact that the guy actually lost the season. And who now knows if there is only one season. The same threatens another talented young man - B. Melikyan.

Today I understand that there is practically no one to address my complaints: there is no head coach in Ararat yet, and it is not known who will have to work with understudies next year. But in order for the team to be able to get out of the breakthrough, it will be necessary to pay close attention to this particular section of the work.

I repeat once again that the creation of a team in the course of the rejuvenation of the composition is a complex, painstaking task. Experienced players are obliged to contribute in every possible way to ensure that it is not solved with a scratch. However, the delay in introducing young players into the first team will not bring success if the coaches follow the lead of those who do not want to give way to them, who do not put up with the fact that young people should also set the tone. "Ararat" lost another capable player last season - A. Movsesyan, who grew up in the team, gained experience, but was, so to speak, psychologically crushed by older partners.

The fate of young football players who come from youth teams to the team of masters worries the coaches who raised them. And this concern turns into concern for the future of the best team in the republic or region. After all, the future of any major league club depends primarily on the quality of training reserves. The team of masters and its coaches should meet the needs of the youth schools coaches. Only by joint efforts can we ensure consistency in the national championship table. In the meantime, unfortunately, good teams often leave. When they leave, having completed their performances, good players, this is natural. When the teams leave, it's a disaster."

CHAPTER 30

1979-1982 Leaves for Algeria to teach at the Institute of Science and Sports

at the football department

1984-1985 Nikita Simonyan invites as the second coach in the Ararat team

1986 -1991 Assistant coach in the youth team of the USSR

1990 European Junior Championship gold (as a coach)

1991 Bronze at the Junior World Championship in Portugal (as coach)

1992 Head coach of the Malatya club

The goal scored by the captain of "Ararat" Hovhannisyan in a fall through himself is the rarest - once the former scorer of Yerevan, and now the team's coach, Eduard Markarov, scored several times. Such goals are rare and are remembered for a long time.

                                                                                                   Oleg Smoleev

For a coach, like a high jumper, the last attempt is a crash.

                                                       Andrey Starostin

Markarov spent three fruitful years in Algeria. He gave lectures at the Department of Football at the Institute of Science and Sports, helped Yevgeny Rogov in his work with the national team. It is thanks to their efforts and efforts that Algerian football players became the finalists of the African Games and for the first time received the right to play at the final stage of the World Cup. Then in Spain, the Algerian team became the main troublemaker and inflicted two sensational defeats on the national teams of Germany and Chile.

...In 1981, the 70th anniversary of the republican football was celebrated in Baku. 33 best football lists for all these years were determined and the symbolic team of the republic was named. The results of the "poll" amazed the most inveterate Armenophobes. The first master of sports in football in the republic, the legendary Artem Markarov, was not included in the list?! And his son - "Baku Pele" - did not enter the symbolic team?!

... In 1984, Nikita Pavlovich Simonyan returned to Ararat. The first person he invited to help him was Markarov. Then we believed (I wanted to believe) that Simonyan and his like-minded people would be able to revive Ararat and make it the leader of Soviet football. But the miracle didn't happen. The football sheets were no longer of that "caliber". There were none among them, with the exception, perhaps, of two or three players, football personalities, with a scattering of which Ararat of the early 70s was richly dotted. To all the troubles of the team - squabbles, gossip, gang bangs - added the "star" disease of the team leaders. There were rumors about contractual matches in which they took an active part. Khoren Hovhannisyan was declared the "scapegoat" for all troubles.

The decency of Simonyan and Markarov did not allow them to work in such conditions, and they resigned: “My second coaching attempt at Ararat coincided with the second attempt of Nikita Pavlovich,” recalls Eduard Markarov. “He was determined to work creatively and persuaded me to become his assistant. If you want frankly, I hoped that sooner or later, as if learning anew, I would prove that I could become a head coach again. But when, a year and a half later, Nikita Pavlovich was given abnormal working conditions, he wrote a letter of resignation. I also did not consider it necessary to stay. We were on the same team with him, so let me be responsible. Another thing, I still did not understand what, in principle, one should be responsible for."

Eduard Artemovich devoted the next five creative years to youth football. He worked as a coach in the republican school of the Olympic reserve and at the same time as the second coach of the youth team of the USSR. Together with Gennady Kostylev, they managed to lead the Soviet team to the European "gold" of the 1990 continental championship and bronze medals of the 1991 World Youth Championship. Several players played in that championship team, whose names will become very popular in the future: Sergey Shcherbakov, Yervand Krbashyan, Andrey Novosadov, Gennady Tumilovich, Armen Babalaryan, Evgeny Bushmanov, Alexander Pomazun and others.

At the World Championships in Portugal, Eduard Markarov showed his wards a brilliant role model. The fact is that in the very first match the main goalkeeper of the national team Andrei Novosadov was injured and was replaced by Tumilovich. During the presentation of bronze medals to our team, Novosadov, who was left without an award, burst into tears. Then Markarov approached him and, to the applause of the audience, put his medal on him! Eduard Artemovich explained his noble deed as follows: "The young man suffered for a common cause. Who knows, we would have won third place if Andrey had not played well in the first match?"

... The Soviet Union collapsed. In the former Soviet republics, and now sovereign states, their own football championships began to be held. Markarov briefly led the Yerevan Malatia team. He is 50 years old. Georgian friends came to the anniversary. The match between the veterans of "Ararat" and "Dynamo" Tbilisi took place at the "Hrazdan" stadium. The applause of the fans who came to watch the beautiful game of the great football players did not cease for a minute. Veteran matches are always an event for Markarov. He tries not to miss any. Meetings on the field with friends of youth, it is felt, give him pleasure. Eduard Artemovich does not forget his trademark blow in the fall through himself (and this is in his middle age). He scored such goals at veterans tournaments in Yerevan and Moscow. An excellent game was demonstrated by Markarov at the Moscow tournament in memory of Eduard Streltsov in 1997. The weekly "Football" in an editorial noted that the best player in the match "Torpedo" - "Ararat", of course, was the unfading 55-year-old Eduard Markarov. “How it opens, how it opens,” admired the head coach of the Russian national team Boris Ignatiev. “I won’t name anyone in the Russian Premier League who would play like that without a ball!”

Eduard Artemovich showed an inspired game at the veterans' tournament in June 2000. Then in Moscow, in the decisive match, the veterans of "Ararat" outplayed (3:1) their peers of the Moscow "Spartak" and took the main prize home.

Let us return, however, to 1992, to hungry and cold Yerevan, when more than a million Armenians left their homeland and dispersed around the world.

In such difficult times for the republic, Eduard Markarov, given his vast coaching experience and authority, was offered to become the first head coach of the Armenian national team in the history of our football. The offer was flattering, and he proudly accepted it.

Markarov began recruiting the team in August 1992, and already on October 14, the team played its first official match at the Hrazdan stadium. Its rival was the national team of Moldova. The meeting, despite the great playing advantage of the Armenian team, ended in a goalless draw.

1992 was marked for Eduard Markarov by another memorable event. As a result of a survey of specialists and football fans, he was recognized as the best football player in Armenia for all the time of its existence.

The survey was conducted by the sports club of the Institute of Physical Education together with the Football Federation. The respondents indicated in the questionnaire the ten best, in their opinion, football players. Ten points were awarded for first place, nine for second, eight for third, and so on. As a result of the calculation, the Honored Master of Sports Eduard Markarov was recognized as the best of the best (715 points). The second was Khoren Hovhannisyan (622), and the third place was taken by Arkady Andriasyan (616). The top ten also included: Sargis Hovivyan (526), Hovhannes Zanazanyan (390), Manuk Semerjyan (320), Alyosha Abrahamyan (283), Sergey Zatikyan (282), Harutyun Kegeyan (271) and Levon Ishtoyan (237).

Everyone who has set foot on the coaching path should know that doomedness to failure is encoded in his profession. It is not easy for coaches to remain in the memory of football fans. Players create in front of millions. The activities of mentors are hidden from the masses. But the results are publicly known. As climbers storm the eight-thousander, so coaches attract teams to the top of the season. In football, it is two-headed - the championship and the Cup. He hoisted the Banner on one of them - praise to you and a crown. Failed to reach the top - start another year all over again.

           Nikolay Starostin

The National Federation headed by Nikolai Ghazaryan took the first independent steps. She began in the most difficult conditions of the collapse of the republic. The federation's treasury was empty - there was no money even to pay for electricity. To maintain communication with FIFA and UEFA, a "left" electrical wiring was carried out from the "Moskva" cinema, located on the opposite side of the street. They didn't pay a salary. Markarov worked with the national team for a symbolic - even at that time, fee - two American dollars a month! But, despite this, he completely devoted himself to work. He was engaged in activities not characteristic of coaches: he took out balls and uniforms to dress and shoe the team; looking for stadiums with green football pitches and hot water showers; Negotiated with sponsors...

Due to lack of funds, only two control matches were held with the teams of the USA (0:1) and Malta (1:0), and even then only in 1994 before the qualifying round of the European Championship. The opponents of the Armenian team in the second group were the national teams of Denmark (the current European champion), Spain, Belgium, Macedonia and Cyprus. The first official match of the Armenian national team was held on September 7, 1994 against the Belgian national team. Before leaving for Brussels, in a conversation with Armenian journalists, Eduard Markarov was extremely frank:

“Just a year ago, with unrestrained passion, we strove for one thing - to play as a separate team at such big shows as the European Football Championship. We have achieved this right, and today it is time to measure everything in cold blood, evaluating the degree of our responsibility. After all, it is very important to worthy of representing national football in the arena of the strongest. Probably, I will not say anything new if I note that this is fraught with many difficulties. And the point is not only that over the past 3-4 years, breaking away from truly big football, we have noticeably lagged behind in It's just that every gathering of the best players is associated with specific difficulties: many of our gifted footballers are playing in different countries today. games, at whose expense and how?

In other words, there are many barriers along the way. But if we think only about the difficulties, then, probably, we should not have agreed to take on such a responsible duty. That is why both I and my assistants, together with the federation, are doing everything possible so that the Armenian team passes its biggest test as it should.

Let's be realistic: today we are not able to compete on an equal footing with such football powers as Spain, Denmark, Belgium. But if it is impossible to defeat such formidable opponents, then I am sure that we can keep the hope that we will not lose. For this, it is very important that the strongest players are involved in the team. If we manage to achieve this, and there is no other way, then the team will be able to show a good game and more or less adequately participate in this big football forum. Let's hope it stays that way."

The overcrowded stadium "Van den Stock" enthusiastically welcomed the appearance of the national teams of Belgium and Armenia on the field. On the tier reserved for our compatriots, who had come to the match from almost all over Europe, the national flags of our country fluttered. Already in the 4th minute of the game, when Yervand Krbashyan headed the ball into his own net, a sigh of disappointment swept through their ranks. The second time the ball hit our net was in the 73rd minute after Mark Degriz's shot.

Despite the defeat, the Armenian team left a favorable impression and left the stadium to a standing ovation and applause from the audience.

The day after the match, the Belgian newspapers, which foreshadowed the crushing defeat of our team, noted the organized and competent game of the debutant of the European championship.

The next match of the Armenian team took place at Hrazdan on October 8 with the Cypriots. Yerevan was still in darkness. Spectators got to the stadium by touch. Only the bowl of the stadium was illuminated. From the very first minutes of the meeting, the residents of Yerevan, anticipating an easy victory, rushed forward. Apparently, the victorious matches of Ararat over the Cypriot teams have not been erased in the memory of the players, in one of which their mentor scored as many as five goals. The confidence of the players was transferred to the spectators in the stands. It seemed to everyone that the visiting team in this match appeared in the form of a rabbit voluntarily going into the mouth of a boa constrictor. But minutes passed, and they still failed to realize their territorial and game advantage. The game ended in a goalless draw.

No wonder the highly experienced Markarov said that "having cut off from truly great football, we have noticeably lagged behind in time." But the Cypriots, on the contrary, have made striking steps forward in recent years, which our football players were once again convinced of in the second leg. "Children of Aphrodite" in Limassol outplayed the Armenian team with a score of 2:0 and became unwitting accomplices of the football coup in Yerevan.

Nikolai Kazaryan was forced to resign from the post of president of the federation. The new executive committee of the federation, by a majority of votes, removed Markarov from the leadership of the national team and appointed his own person instead.

Markarov, although he was bitter and offended, reacted to this judiciously and calmly: “The point is not that I left the national team, but that they acted unfairly - the results of the games played did not give rise to resignation. preparing the team for the European Championship, one should have waited for the results. If the results were unsatisfactory, the verdict of the executive committee would be justified. Nobody accused me of anything and did not point out any shortcomings. positions by the decision of the executive committee". The grounds, however, as well as the reasons, are not mentioned. Siamanto has a wonderful line: "Justice, let me spit in your face."

Having recovered after the hassle with the federation, Markarov in the summer of 1995 accepted the Yerevan Omenmen, renamed Erebuni two years later. The club eked out a miserable existence, annually fighting for survival in the major leagues. Markarov's talent had an effect here as well. From an ordinary team, he created a team that was already thinking about championship medals. And a year later, in the championship of 1997, "Erebuni", led by Markarov, became the "bronze" team of the country.

After one of the matches, the head of the club decided to demonstrate his knowledge of football, and in the locker room, in the presence of Markarov's wards, he reprimanded him on the tactics of the game. An amateur taught the master of football how to play football. If he pointed out the omissions of the organizational plan, it would be understandable, but in football tactics!?...

Markarov left in English without saying goodbye, and a few days later he was already working in ... Lebanon.

"I left quietly, without scandal," says Eduard. where I have been called for a long time."

It so happened that at the time when Markarov was coaching the Beirut Omenmen (one of the two Armenian clubs playing in the major league of the Lebanese championship), the Russian NTV channel had a series of programs for almost a year - "The Age of Football". In this television project by Alexander Weinstein, Armenia was represented by only one Markarov. After that, it became clear even to his opponents and ill-wishers that Eduard Artemovich was already recognized as the number one Armenian football-list of all time at the all-Union level.

Markarov did not stay in Beirut. Mikhail Bagdasarov appeared on the football firmament of Armenia. A native of Baku, who lived next door to great football players, could not pass by big football. A big businessman and philanthropist decided to create a football super-team. It was impossible to think of a better candidate for the position of head coach than Markarov.

Bagdasarov was not mistaken in his calculations. Ashtarak "Mika", led by the patriarch of Armenian football, climbed out of the bottom of the first league and won the right to play among the country's elite clubs.

A debutant in the first year of his stay in the major leagues, he won one of the main football trophies - the Independence Cup! "Mika" showed cup character the next year, defeating all the strongest teams of the country: "Zvartnots", "Pyunik" and "Ararat" on the way to the coveted prize. In these two magnificent victories, the joy of success, together with Eduard Artemovich, was rightfully shared by his assistants - Armais Tonoyan and Vazgen Hayrapetyan, with whom he played in Ararat back in the distant 71st. And on the football field, the conductors of his coaching score were the team captains, who characterize their mentor as follows:

Abraham Khashmanyan (Miki's captain in 2000): "Eduard Markarov is a wonderful person. He treats the players very humanely, has a subtle pedagogical approach to them and knows the way to their hearts. At the same time, first of all, he is a great connoisseur football, a talented tactician and strategist. Thanks to the coaching talent of Markarov, "Mika" made a leap in a short time and today our efforts and efforts have been crowned with victory."

Armen Petikyan (Miki's captain in 2001): "The night before the final match, Eduard Markarov did not sleep a wink, outlining the strategy for the upcoming meeting with the rest of the coaches. Of course, our head coach is a subtle and sophisticated tactician."

The merits of Eduard Markarov in the formation and success of "Miki" were appreciated, and Mikhail Bagdasarov established a new position in the club especially for him - vice-president in charge of the team's playing and training processes.

“I knew in advance that he would become a coach, although I guessed how much squabbles, squabbles and hassle this work is fraught with. During these two decades, he more than knew the bitterness of the coaching lot, and I, along with him. For example, I felt in my heart that he should not agree to coaching at Ararat in 1976. True, the husband believes that his debut was more than successful. What's the point - I had to leave soon. The coach loses more nerve cells than the one who enters the field. Already working as a mentor, my husband got an ulcer, was twice on the operating table, twice was on the verge of life and death ... I don’t go to football, I don’t know how Edik behaves while playing on the coaching bench. But abroad, I sometimes visited the stadium and saw that he very rarely gets up from his seat, even when the team plays poorly. He knows how to control himself in the most extreme situations.”

Stella Markarova

CHAPTER 32

The career of a football player depends to a large extent on the reliability of the family rear. How many football stars went out due to trouble in the family?! Many of them drank themselves (Voronin, Chislenko, Banishevsky, Melkumyan...) and left our mortal world at a far advanced age. But the Markarovs were lucky with the family rear: Berta Grigorievna was a wonderful wife and mother. She passed the baton of fire to her daughter-in-law, Stella Viktorovna.

Stella Markarova says:

“We met at a traditional open door evening at our school. Then a lot of girls ran after Edik, and he, in my opinion, didn’t take it very seriously. Edik saw me and that’s all. He began to invite me to the elite cinema “Artistic”, where tickets We loved to visit the Russian Drama Theater. Like everyone else, there were disputes (I can’t live without disputes). Everything is decided in disputes with us. I rarely agree, but if I agree, it’s for a long time. In this respect, Mark- it's very hard for me to fight.

We played a wedding at the end of 1967. Our friends and relatives had fun on it, and the next day, the then first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Republic, Veli Akhundov, came to congratulate us. He was on friendly terms with the Markarov family, knew Father Edik well, respected my mother-in-law.

I bow before the memory of Berta Grigorievna. She was an amazingly sensitive and sincere person. I admired how mother and son treated each other. Edik idolized his mother. She was the number one mentor for him and Ira. When we were still dating, I became an involuntary witness how Berta Grigorievna scolded her famous son for an inexpressive game in a won (!) Match in which he scored a goal. What was it like for the 25-year-old football star to stand with his head down and listen to his mother: “Get out of football, don’t dishonor the name of the pope.” And in response, not a sound. This is how they set up their house. She was infinitely kind, but at the same time a very demanding woman. She believed that if you devoted your whole life to one cause, you should be on top.

The Markarov family was soldered. They couldn't live even a second without each other. And now, as a bride, I enter their family. And, of course, it seemed to everyone that I was a destroyer, now I would take Edik away, and he would no longer be next to them. I felt this jealousy, not even jealousy, but the fear of losing my brother and son. But I felt that, having got to know me better, they would understand that there was nothing to be afraid of. And so it happened.

The saying "cinderella is a snake head" does not apply to Irina, she is a normal person, and if you are also a normal person, then the sister-in-law will understand this. I think that's what happened to us.

Ira and I are great friends. We miss each other very much when we don't see each other for a long time. We help each other in difficult times. She now lives abroad, and when we talk on the phone with her, she cannot do without tears. Irina still loves her brother madly."

The story of his wife continues Eduard Markarov:

"In the 60s, the Neftyanik volleyball team was one of the best in the country. Olympic champions Ryskal and Lantratova played in the team. All the girls played just fine. When we succeeded, the whole team went to the matches of volleyball players. Except my sister there the wives of Trofimov, Semin also played ...

My mother was also an athlete. She showed promise in swimming, but when she got married, she left the sport and devoted herself to her family.

So I decided to change the family tradition and prove that people who are not connected with sports will be able to survive in a sports family. I think I succeeded. The main thing is that Stella and our family found a common language, and she became an equal member of the family. And not only Stella, but also her sister Natella, their mother and grandmother. That is, one big and good one was formed from two families.

... I am often asked why your son did not continue the football dynasty. Eric had all the makings to grow into a high-class football player, even surpass me professionally. He was engaged in football purposefully, he dreamed of a great football career. Even now, when he is over 40, he continues to play for Russian veterans and, they say, not bad.

To devote oneself to professional sports means to give oneself to it completely with all the ensuing consequences. These are trams for life, these are incredible nervous experiences, and the return in material terms in Soviet times was not at all what it is now. Having experienced all the charms of this life for myself, I decided that Eric should devote himself to another profession. He graduated from the Scriabin Academy in Moscow (he became a fur specialist) and the Institute of American-Soviet Economic Relations. True, Eric scolds us for this and says that we are to blame, that he did not become a football player and did not continue the dynasty. Yes, and I regret it today. There is only one hope for the future grandson. Still, genes will probably take their toll. They affected my daughter, who is not indifferent to football and even plays it well. If women's football were developed in Armenia, Erica would definitely take a leading position in the team."

The Markarovs and today, as in their youth, are an inseparable couple.

Stella Viktorovna takes the floor again:

“I have the impression that Edik met me only yesterday. I don’t feel the burden of a 34-year life together, when the husband and wife already become relatives. Edik creates the atmosphere of those days when we just met. And even if children and grandchildren are around us, we can get up with him and go to nature or to the country house, or go to a restaurant together. We love to visit the opera house and the theater of musical comedy named after Paronyan, but mainly the theater named after Stanislavsky.

We have two sixteen-year-old granddaughters, one eight-year-old granddaughter, and so far the only two-year-old grandson who address Edik only as "grandfather". He is the real grandfather: he spent sleepless nights when the children were teething, when they were sick or simply did not want to sleep. He is a grandfather when you need to take him to kindergarten, play in the yard, read a fairy tale. He is a grandfather when you need to punish or kiss.

As before, the whole family cheers for every game of Edik. Even when my mother was alive, not to mention his, when the children were still very young, this day was for us a terrible day of excitement and worries. On the day of the game, according to an already established tradition, we always have a table set. To us come, as they say, people with a light foot, proven. That is, people who support us from the bottom of their hearts, from the bottom of their hearts. They know that I have already set the table, and we should have a drink and a snack, as if spiritually, to support the team from a distance. I want to say that I have never seen how my husband and the team he coaches played. I don't watch football because I'm very nervous and I can't stand these two hours. When Edik leaves the house, we pour water after him. It is necessary. My daughter-in-law already knows this. Daughter, Erika, if in Yerevan, she definitely goes to the stadium. But Eric in Moscow on this day also receives guests.

And we also have our own motto: losing is an emergency, and winning is the norm. We do not represent another in our family."

He is considered lucky, a darling of fate. Fortune favored him, although he himself believes that not always.

They swore allegiance and friendship in his name, they called newborns. The best pages of Baku and Armenian football are connected with him. "Oilman" under Markarov "took off", became a bronze medalist and disappeared into oblivion when he left the team.

"Ararat" before him did not rise above the eighth place in the national championship, and here immediately the second place, then the first, two victories in the USSR Cup. He hung up his boots, and "Ararat" again became a mediocre team, lacking more than stars from heaven.

There are legends about Markarov's ability to instantly find a common language with new partners and immediately create bombardment tandems. So it was in Neftyanik with Yuri Kuznetsov and Anatoly Banishevsky, in the national teams of the Union with Valery Reingold and Vladimir Fedotov, with Arkady Andriasyan in Ararat.

Although Markarov did not play many matches in the first USSR national team, he achieved the highest success among Armenian football players in it - the team took fourth place in the 1966 World Cup.

And as a coach he is one of the best. Here are some of the achievements of Eduard Markarov:

- silver medals "Ararat" in the championship of the USSR in 1976;

- "Ararat" - finalist of the USSR Cup in 1976;

- Youth team of the USSR - European champion in 1990;

- Youth team of the USSR - bronze medalist of the 1991 World Championship;

- Mika is a two-time winner of the Independence Cup of Armenia (2000-2001).

Eduard Artemovich Markarov is 70. Twenty-six of them he lived in Baku and forty-four in Yerevan. In the "city of winds" he had a son - Ernest, and in the Armenian capital - a beautiful daughter - Erica.

June 20, 2012 the great football player and coach Eduard Markarov will be only 70 years old! Markarov devoted 65 of them to football.

And this means that it is too early to sum up his coaching activities. Of course, he will have more than one chance to conquer new football heights.

And of course  I really want to hope that someday in the near future at the famous football stadiums of the world  will  shine already the grandson of the legendary football player,  and again the joyful voice of the announcer will be heard: "The goal was scored by Eduard Markarov!"

Once having gained height, the ball must fly for a long time. And just crash into the net to the delight of football fans.

Let the flight continue. We know that it will end in a goal. Because the Master himself gave the trajectory to the ball.
