CHAPTER 21

1971 "Ararat"

I remember that a few years ago, when Eduard Markarov played in Neftchi, there was talk that Markarov was “not the right one”. That it's time for him to give way to the young. And he did not want to give in, because he felt the strength in himself, knew his capabilities. But when a person is reminded too often that he is taking someone else's place, he involuntarily begins to consider himself guilty. Markarov's game really faded. He left Baku in a heavy mood. How will they meet in the new team? Received warmly and kindly. And the footballer seemed to be born again. Again, the audience saw his excellent dribbling, the opinion of choosing a place, instantly assessing the situation, accurately breaking through on goal. A significant contribution was made by Markarov to the current success of Ararat, but to an even greater extent, I think, Eduard himself is indebted to the team. After all, only thanks to his new comrades, he managed to find himself, to believe in his strength again: to find, as they say, a second youth.

                                                Sergey Kruzhkov

“Edik suffered the death of his mother very hard. Having celebrated his forties, he announced his decision: “We must move to Armenia. Forever". To be honest, I didn’t want such a change, but I didn’t have the right to insist on my own, - recalls Stella Markarova. - The next day he packed a sports bag, got into the car and drove off to Yerevan. he was going to take such a step for a long time, but the housing issue always hung in the air at the last moment.Soon, I came to my husband with small children. We were given an apartment in the center of Yerevan, it was the guest house of the Ararat team, and before us in it lived coach Alexander Ponomarev. Slowly they began to settle in. During this period, Edik needed moral support. Of course, he was glad that the Yerevan fans accepted him as their own. But most of all he appreciated the attitude of his teammates. In difficult times, they often offered a shoulder to everyone Thanks to them, especially to Shurik Kovalenko. He has always been with us."

To take root in "Ararat" Markarov was also helped by the fact that almost half of the team were fellow-Baku residents (Ghazaryan, Andriasyan, Avanesyan, Poghosyan, Harutyunyan, Karapetyan) with a mentality close to him. Here is how Edward describes it:

"They received me very well at Ararat, as if I had played there for a hundred years. I came to a team that was technical, thinking, fighting, somewhat related to the Neftyanik, where I spent many years. Prior to that, before Ararat, there were big no tasks were set, although by that time the team was quite ripe for success: a group of leading players had just entered the best football age... Talented individuals played in Ararat, but there was no team, in fact, a team game did not develop. teamwork was instilled in me from childhood. Arkadyev also taught me this. I’m not going to take anything to my credit: everything settled by itself, without talking or prodding. Andriasyan, Ishtoyan, and other guys understood that it’s easier for defenders when they "Start up". And I love to pass, to play the "wall" - the guys tried it, felt how freer it was to beat the defenders. Perhaps I was the last missing link that closed the chain. Frankly, I was worried: how will things go here? In training excitement subsided. When you start to work and sweat together with everyone, and then give everything you can in games, share your experience and skills with your comrades, you quickly realize that you have been accepted. If we talk about the main feature characteristic of Ararat's game in 1971, then I would say that each of the players, first of all, added in football thinking. This largely explains the success of our club. And I was lucky again: I turned out to be the point guard, as before, but at the same time they expected goals from me - in a word, “my game”.

In early March, the popular Soviet journalist Valery Vinokurov flew to Yerevan. Especially for "Football-Hockey" he had to prepare a report on the pre-season preparation of "Ararat".

Vinokurov wrote: “Sunny Yerevan after snow-covered Moscow. Loyal fans gather for training, loyal and believing every spring that finally Ararat will take the place it deserves. And that it deserves a high place, they never doubt "It was. And it's true - in the spring Yerevan always looks good. This time too. I didn't notice anything unusual in their preparation. I remember the energy of the new coach N. Glebov, he was attracted by his characteristic desire to diversify classes, that the contact between him and the players is quickly being established, which was seen both by him and their merit.

First conversation with E.Markarov, who moved to Ararat. Here he quickly settled in. New partners and comrades received him not only cordially, but immediately treated him with great respect, as a true master. It didn't surprise me. However, it would not surprise anyone who knows what he is like in training.

Yes, he was expected. For many years, the Armenians of the entire Union have dreamed of seeing Eduard Markarov in the form of the main team of Armenia. Before the start of each football season, Ararat fans expected him to appear in their favorite team. And when, in January 1971, rumors spread around Yerevan about Markarov's training at Ararat, they did not immediately believe it. People flocked to the team's classes in the hope of seeing the famous striker. And, having made sure, he no longer doubted the forthcoming successes of "Ara-rat".

"In the first days of January, Ararat started a training camp in Yerevan, and about a month later the team went to the Black Sea coast. The line-up basically did not change. Only Eduard Markarov, who moved from Neftchi, replenished the offensive line - Stepan Gharibyan wrote in a football review. - Edik is a high-class footballer, but he had to fit into the ensemble of the new team, feel confident in Ararat. Both Markarov and the coaches worked seriously on this , teammates."

On March 16, 1971, there was a full house at the Republican Stadium. On this day, the long-awaited re-registration of "Baku Pele" into "Armenian" was to take place. In that cup match with Chernomorets, Markarov did not score a goal, but assisted Harutyunyan in this. He opened the personal account of Ararat's goals in Odessa in the second meeting, which took place on March 20th.

Markarov reserved his first goal in Yerevan for the match against Karpaty Lviv, which opened the all-Union championship. On the 24th minute Avanesyan crossed the ball into the penalty area of the guests, Bonda-Renko, having won a duel with the goalkeeper, redirected the ball under the blow to Markarov, who confirmed his goalscoring skills.

One of the local newspapers wrote: “On the opening day, the Republican stadium was full. For the first time, a long-awaited football player was supposed to appear on the green field in the Ararat uniform.

The arrival of Eduard Markarov in Yerevan - and he was that football player - came in handy for the Ararat team. Yerevan residents needed a player who could play the role of a dispatcher. The scoring player was also in short supply. Eduard not only controlled the middle of the field, organized the attack, carried the partners forward, but also took advantageous positions himself and, most importantly, in most cases confidently converted scoring opportunities. The forward appeared at different points of the field, performed any duties. One got the impression that Markarov felt like the master of the game, obliged to control all areas where his presence was needed. He played and led, by his own example, forcing partners to be true to the game idea."

A few days later, "Ararat" played two games in Moscow, which turned out to be the beginning of the ascent to the "silver" top of the championship. With the same score 1:0, the capital's army and torpedo men were defeated. If in the first match the goalkeeper of the rivals Schmuts helped Yerevan (like a disco thrower, he tried to throw the ball into the field, and it treacherously slipped from his hands and flew back into the goal), then in the game with the car factory "Ararat" had an undeniable advantage and scored a labor goal. "Forwards led by Ishtoyan and Kazaryan, supported and directed by Markarov's not very conspicuous, but useful and reasonable game, weaved attacking combinations," Alexander Wit wrote.

Even more virtuoso game "Ararat" demonstrated in the next match of the championship, beating local Dynamo in Tbilisi with a devastating score - 4:0. “Tbilisians failed to cope with the tutelage of Markarov, who skillfully managed the team’s game,” the referee of the all-Union category Georgy Bakanidze noted in the match report.

The first goal was the result of a multi-way combination. Nikolay Kazarian was brought into the gap on the left edge of the attack with a long pass. From the goal line, he shot hard at Markarov from the bottom, and Eduard gracefully missed the ball between his legs and Zanazanyan, who ran in, opened the scoring with a beautiful blow. Eduard scored the second goal after a well-played “wall” with Kazarian. Markarov scored the third ball already with the help of Ishtoyan. Well, the fourth one scored with a long-range shot by Bondarenko.

"Edik, that's enough," Khurtsilava turned to his old friend. "Don't disgrace us."

The match is over. The situation in the camps of recent rivals was inadequate. Khurtsilava unexpectedly ran into the locker room of the Ararat team. "Now they will beat us," one of the residents of Yerevan joked. And the excited Murtaz, spreading his arms, blurted out: “Guys, you have no idea what you did to us. You butchered us on all counts. We didn’t know who to catch, how to keep. You will be champions. !". And then he came up and kissed everyone in turn.

Four days after the Tbilisi match, the Yerevan team also defeated the second Transcaucasian team - Baku Neftchi - 2:1. The intrigue of this meeting was that for the first time Eduard Markarov played against his former teammates. Mandatory in such cases, he scored a goal already in the 19th minute. Norik Mesropyan struck hard and accurately on goal, Shekhov did not hold the ball, and Markarov, who came running, brought "Ararat" forward. In the first half, Eduard could score again when he stayed face to face with Shekhov. With a false movement, he laid the goalkeeper on the ground, but hesitated and, together with the ball, ended up out of bounds. Unfortunately, at the beginning of the second half, Ararat's conductor was injured and left the field, which immediately affected the attacking power of the Yerevan team.

The injury turned out to be serious, and Edward was forced to miss four league matches. Without its leader, "Ararat" "slowed down" in these matches and managed to win only one game - with "Kairat", on the day of the grand opening of the "Hrazdan" stadium.

Oleg Kucherenko compared the absence of Markarov in the game with Spartak Moscow with a "brain drain". The famous journalist stressed that Markarov, who joined Ararat, "blossomed" the Armenian team.

On June 20, on his birthday, Markarov was already in the ranks. On this day, "Ararat" hosted the Donetsk "Shakhtar". At the 80th minute of the match, Eduard presented himself and the fans of his rock gift. Leaving his usual place as a dispatcher, he moved forward, and while the guests sorted out this restructuring, he responded to Ishtoyan's long pass, entered the goalkeeper's area and threw the ball over Degtyarev.

In the next match with Zorya Voroshilovgrad, Markarov scored two goals and topped the list of league scorers with seven goals. Eduard scored the first goal against Zorya already in the 6th minute of the meeting. It was a handsome goal: Markarov gave a pass to the right side of Ishtoyan, and he rushed to the center of the penalty area. A return pass followed, and the ball, after Eduard's hit, flew under the crossbar, as if fired from a catapult. The scored goal added strength to Ararat, which in those minutes literally did everything. Spectators saw a good distribution, strong blows, solo passages. The guests, who did not expect such a start, were completely demoralized. The game was, as they say, one goal. Its logical conclusion was the second goal. Kazarian at high speed went along the left side and shot along the gate. Andriasyan, seeing that Markarov was in a better position, conceded the ball, and Eduard, who ran in, scored a goal with his head.

In the next round "Ararat" lost in Rostov to the local army team (0:1), which allowed the Yerevan team... to rise to the first place in the championship. The fact is that the people of Kiev, who were in the lead before, lost in Lviv with a score of 1:3 and, by goal difference, let Ararat go ahead.

There were two games left to play before the end of the first round. The first in Leningrad with "Zenith" ended in a draw - 3:3. Markarov became the author of two goals. One was scored after his individual pass, and he finished off the other when the goalkeeper of the hosts Pronin did not keep the ball after a long-range shot by Mesropyan.

Markarov had nine goals to his credit, and after the first lap he single-handedly led the football-sick sniper race.

The victory in Moscow against Dynamo (1:0) strengthened the position of Ararat. He broke away from the Muscovites by two points, but lagged behind the Kievites by the same amount. "Surprise" "Ararat" had a lot of press:

"What distinguishes Ararat today? First of all, the middle line, a kind of headquarters where combinations are thought out and carried out. Each of the midfielders is an individual, but one complements the other, and together they are a whole ensemble. Holding the ball, midfielders often cause fire on himself, forcing the enemy to attack, and when the opponent "reveals", Markarov instantly appears in the forefront. This footballer is quite famous. Now in the team he plays the role of a link between attack and midfield. Those who see only a dispatcher in Markarov are mistaken. Strong accurate shots, the ability to quickly navigate in difficult situations make him a dangerous scorer.Let's recall the goals scored against Zorya.Markarov received a pass in the middle of the field, then re-corrected it to the right, where L.Ishtoyan opened. The defenders decided that Markarov, as they say, had already done his job, but he instantly rushed to the penalty area, received a return pass and immediately sent the ball into the goal irresistibly. about the same.

This is "Ararat" today - a sample of 1971. This is a strong, original, friendly team."

Now, when I look at Ararat, it sometimes seems to me that there is a team on the field that has already become something of a pion. Ararat plays rationally, it doesn’t seem to be in a hurry to score a goal, but methodically finds the opponent’s weaknesses and gradually begins to suppress his initiative. It is felt that the team is sure that the enemy will not go anywhere, they will still concede a goal. This is how the people of Kiev played in 1966-67, then it was not easy to survive under their pressure. "

"If the best team of May were determined, I would give my vote to Ararat Yerevan. First of all, for playing with soul, for passion, combativeness and meaningfulness. Football, for all its collectivity, always remains a struggle of individuals. Each match crumbles into martial arts, on a collision "creativity with adaptability. The team looked better than others due to less adaptability to rivals. Yerevan residents shone with activity, which was not dictated by the tournament or match situation, but looked natural, coming from the players."

“Ararat attacks widely, without stopping in the middle of the field and excellently using Ishtoyan, Zanazanyan, Ghazaryan on the flanks. Yerevan has a qualified dispatcher – Markarov. In the game without the ball, Ararat, without exaggeration, is still ahead of the rest of the championship participants. "I don't want to present "Ararat" as a team without flaws. I won't say that all the qualities that I have named are manifested at every moment of every game. But the team has them, it develops them, strives for an interesting content, beautiful football, without betraying it in the most intense struggle with the most experienced teams."

“Ararat Yerevan made a striking leap up in the table. Armenian players were famous for their technique, their invention on the field. Football players of different generations were repeatedly represented in the USSR national team. line, attracts the attention of specialists and spectators. The club also includes the best sniper of the first round E.Markarov, who has high technique and accurate shots, who managed to bring organization into the actions of his partners.I would like to wish Eduard after the injury to quickly acquire the mobility that he excelled in the early league games."

“The current Ararat, by all accounts, plays naturally and beautifully, which, however, does not mean that its players are “greenhouse creatures.” Using football that is open, offensive and certainly chivalrous, each player remains a real sports fighter, giving the entire game itself, the achievement of one collective goal.

Three times this summer "Ararat" had to recoup, and twice - on the field of rivals. And all three times the team managed to turn the tide of the fight.

This speaks volumes and, in particular, that the "strong-willed muscles" of the team, its morale to match its sportsmanship. More precisely, if it were not for this very spirit, luck would not have come to the Araratians, which now hardly anyone dares to call accidental.

CHAPTER 22

1971 "Ararat" - Silver medalist of the USSR Championship

Eduard Markarov - No. 3 in the list of the best football players of the USSR in 1971

Eduard Markarov is a member of the Grigory Fedotov Club

Martyn Merzhanov always had favorites - teams, players, journalists. Either “Torpedo”, then Tbilisi “Dynamo”, then “Ararat” ... Either Valery Voronin, then Mikhail Meskhi, then Slava Metreveli, then Viktor Monday, then Eduard Markarov ... He pinned photos of his chosen ones near his table and to everyone, who came to the editorial office, showed: "See? This is how he is supposed to play! .. And not like those you support ...

                                      Lev Filatov

I can say that there are few such "technicians" as Markarov in football.

                                                                   Viktor Maslov

Start in the second round "Ararat" failed. Successfully played matches at home alternated with failures on the road. Markarov's sniper barometer stuck at the 97 mark. In this black-and-white period, a draw in Moscow with Spartak was remembered. In "Football-Hockey" Valery Berezovsky wrote:  “There were a lot of sensations of various kinds this year. But one sensation, one revelation of the current championship accompanies us almost from the first rounds - along with the performances of Ararat Yerevan.

Is it an accidental takeoff, is it for a long time, or, as has happened more than once, will another meteor flash in our sky? Who's going to say now? They thought that "Ararat" would not last even a circle, that its players, who were invited in great demand to the national teams, would not withstand either physical exertion or the test of success. But, obviously, a team that has been preparing its nomination for more than one year will not immediately give up the won positions.

...If the residents of Yerevan had succumbed to the temptation and strayed into the long-standing game of dragging the ball all the way, with all sorts of tricks, the Muscovites would most likely have overcome them. However, "Ararat" is playing differently now. He has quite a modern game: good movement, accurate, forward passes, frequent offers from partners, a clear pass, good connections between the lines. Forward breakthroughs on the flanks are supported by unexpected offers in the center of either two midfielders, or Markarov with one of the three midfielders, and you almost never guess which pair will jump out at the gate. In a word, the residents of Yerevan are playing a tactical game with skill.

“Spartak”, I don’t know if this was part of the plan, or if the opponent forced him to do this, first he got the role of the counterattacking side. Then, after the break, the teams switched roles, but it should be noted that both teams looked good in both roles."

... Markarov "broke through" in the match with "Pakhtakor", where he became the author of two goals. Moreover, the second, decisive, scored with a score of 2:2, was amazing in beauty.

Then again the "dead spot"... It was difficult to give every goal, every point... And after all, the prize-winning place and the ticket to the UEFA Cup were very close. But fatigue, nerves...

“At the end of the summer, when Markarov was approaching joining the Fedotov Club, it seemed that Edik, less than us, thought whether he would get to the coveted hundred,” said the head of the team, Eduard Grigorievich Grigoryan. he is not even now, when there is only one goal left to score. He always gives the ball away if the partner is at least in a slightly better position. The guys appreciate it, and therefore consider it their comradely duty, even a matter of their sporting honor, so that Edik makes a hundred."

The happy day for Markarov came on October 30, when at the Hrazdan stadium in the presence of 75 thousand spectators he hit the gates of the Leningrad Zenit twice. The first goal, which became the hundredth, Mar-karov scored in the middle of the first half with the score 1:0 in favor of Ararat, sending the ball with an accurate kick into the bottom corner of the goal. To the delight of the audience, the long-awaited figure lit up on both scoreboards. Eduard walked for ten years to this happy moment in his football life.  “Becoming a member of the Fedotov Club, I feel great joy. Getting into this club is not easy. Some people think that all kinds of digital records should be treated with humor. hard struggle "for scoring" and gave her many years of life. Most likely, my hundredth goal was not the best. For example, I would not mind if the 99th goal scored against Pakhtakor turned out to be an anniversary, - Edkard Markarov recalls and continues. - Sasha Kovalenko, having taken the ball from the opponent, gave it well to Serezha Bondarenko, and I rushed from the middle of the field to the penalty area. Bondarenko shot hard into the middle of the penalty area. I feel that I don’t get it, but still with the last of my strength, I rush forward and at a height of about two and a half meters I manage to cut the ball into the corner of the goal with my head. And then I still flew across the field for a meter and a half, hit my back hard on the ground, but I didn’t even feel pain, joy took over.

But I would like to point out one more thing. If some important stage has been passed, this does not mean that everything is over. A footballer always keeps learning...

“In the last round, Ararat hosted Dynamo Moscow,” wrote Valery Berezovsky. his 14th goal in the national championship. Such an important match was lost by the Muscovites due to the fault of the defenders, who signed their failure against Markarov and Kazaryan. It was noticeable that their central defender Anichkin was inferior in technique and positional play to Markarov and could not do it right organize defense. In this match, Yerevan, so to speak, legally formalized their rights to silver medals, with which we all heartily congratulate them. Ararat, in my opinion, this season is perhaps the only team to which the least of all claims from both fans and specialists, and specifically - from A. Po-nomarev, the head coach of the Olympic team, and in the recent past - "Ararat", which called for a good half of the games under the banner of this team rock of the Yerevan team.

Of course, the fans of "Ararat" are satisfied, which has grown so much over the past two or three years that it has managed to "become a silver medalist" for the first time in its history.

And here are other responses of football experts.

Viktor Dubinin:

"As befits a great team, Ararat was in no hurry to change the line-up during the tournament, except for cases of injuries, which, by the way, are not so frequent, which indicates the physical fitness of the players.

"Ararat" managed to get ahead of many full-time leaders not only in terms of points, but also in the class of the game.

... In general, "Ararat" boldly stepped into open, technical, beautiful football and somehow immediately turned out to be one of the leading teams in the country. In his game, the features of the football that was shown at the World Cup a year ago were visible - the high starting speed of the players in tackling the ball mainly on interceptions, relaxed, soft work with the ball, the art of feint and playing without the ball, freedom of improvisation within the framework of a collective game, explosive speed in the final phase of the attack."

Martyn Merzhanov:

"Ararat" plays with pronounced extreme forwards - Kazaryan and Ishtoyan, with point guard central striker Markarov and two midfielders - Andriasyan and Zanazanyan. Rather, they resemble the former insiders, but they act in a more original way and boldly come forward. Thus "Ararat" always attacks with five players. As soon as Ararat takes the game into their own hands and starts moving forward with a wide front and sharp diagonal passes, we see the witty maneuvering of the midfielders and extreme forwards, the movement of the whole team. At the same time, Markarov, with first-class possession of the ball and possessing fine combinational vision, conducted the attack and accurately distributed the balls. The most favorite maneuver, which even experienced defenders came across, was to quickly move Ishtoyan to the point of attack behind the back of one of the stoppers. At the same moment, as if by music, Zanazanyan appeared in place of the right winger, thus maintaining the width of the attacking front and threatening the goal from the flank. Such tactical moves forced the opponent to stretch the line of defense to the limit, and then Andriasyan and Markarov quickly entered the "fire zone". It was real football aggression, when it was easy to follow the clarity of the passes, the relationship of the attackers and the ease of handling the ball. The team played cleverly, beautifully and with inspiration... Of course, not every time they managed to carry out a sharp, ingenious combination, not every time they managed to hit the goal, but, undoubtedly, such a tactical game brought many victories to the team, and Markarov - high efficiency. He scored fourteen goals, and each of them is laborious, skillfully executed, not a single easy one, as they say, "gift". It's rare for anyone to do that."

Valery Vinokurov:

"Two new people came to Ararat, and both played an important and quite definite role. The greatest merit of Nikolai Glebov is, I think, that he did not break the established manner, style of the team, that he, without giving up his own views to the game, treated the work of his predecessor Ponomarev with respect and trust and tried to develop and complete the work he had begun.

Of course, the new head coach, a well-known football theorist, tried to modernize Ararat's game in tactical terms. It seems to me that for the first time we saw in the performance of the Yerevan team a well-developed combined defense, a clear distribution of duties among the midfielders and an interesting, moreover, not immediately conspicuous combination of Zanazanyan-Markarov, which resemble, as it were, a duet of center forwards drawn into the depths. This pair seemed to increase the number of team players, because it allowed to have four midfielders, then four forwards.

It is not easy to speak about the role of Eduard Markarov. When it comes to a well-coordinated team, usually no one wants to be singled out. There is a danger of overestimating the contribution of one, even an excellent master. But on the other hand, without paying tribute to the big players, underestimating them (this, unfortunately, often happens with us), are we contributing to the depersonalization, is it not from here that the desire of coaches to cut one size fits all - and young,

and mature, isn't that why we lose bright individuality?

Before writing about Markarov, I spoke with Boris Andreevich Arkadiev, who once, a dozen years ago, attracted this young man to the main team of masters. Markarov idolizes Arkadiev. Boris Andreevich speaks of him with warmth, even tenderness, and at the same time with great respect.

As for Ararat, he (Arkadiev also thinks so) lacked just such a player who knows how to bring the largest possible number of partners into interaction in each section of the field, in each episode. With his arrival, the game of the Yerevanians became more ambitious or something, the attack was led not only by local sharp injections, but in various directions, with a constant and smooth change of zones of pressure on the defense. Markarov's skill in individual outplaying an opponent (Arkadiev's wording) allows him, who sees the field perfectly, is good at passing, to play a collective game, to find himself in situations that are objectively beneficial for interactions with partners.

At the same time, Markarov did not score less, perhaps even the opposite."

When these lines were written, the venerable journalist did not assume that with the departure of Markarov from Neftchi, the fate of this team would be sealed. A year later, she left the big leagues and never managed to "come to her senses."

But "Ararat", on the contrary, came to life, flourished and for six years was one of the legislators of the country's football fashion.

Konstantin Yesenin, the country's chief football statistician, summed up the season: "Eduard Markarov was passed" at the turn in the fight for the Trud prize, but he managed to score his hundredth goal before Malofeev. He has never succeeded in a “hat-trick”, for five years now he has not succeeded (the last time on May 19, 1966), but he did five doubles in a season - he scored two goals five times.

Yes, just like that, at the very finish line, the Belarusian Edik of the Armenian was "burned". Was Markarov offended? And how! About this episode of his football life he wrote:

“Not only statisticians conjure numbers - we forwards also closely follow the scorers race. After all, we ourselves participate in it! At the finish of the championship, Malofeev had, if I’m not mistaken, 11 goals. I scored more and then went first. Well , I think, two more pieces to score, and Edik will not catch up with me. I understood that he, most likely, would not stop at what he had achieved, but so that ... In the last two rounds, Malofeev scored five goals and came out ahead - miracles, and only!

Edik himself is a decent person, if something was set up there, I'm sure he personally had nothing to do with it. I didn’t have many disappointments - I survived this, especially since our fans for the “silver” thanked us so warmly that in the end we even began to hide from them.

Markarov's brilliant game throughout the season had a lot of press, and at the end of the year 122 journalists representing 65 TASS, APN, radio and television publications named Eduard the third football player of the USSR! Ahead of him in the poll were only the champions of the year, the players of Kiev "Dynamo" Yevgeny Rudakov and Viktor Kolotov.

For the first time, Markarov also entered the list of "33 best" football players in the country, which was compiled by the coaching council of the USSR Football Federation. Among the central forwards, he was the third. With all due respect to CSKA center forward Boris Kopeikin, his second place (higher than Markarov?!) in this list caused only a smile among football experts.

But Markarov was not offended. He was happy with the third place, and in general, that he finally got into this list. After all, even in his best years (1965-68), when he shone on the football fields and was considered, of course, one of the leading players in the country, the coaching council that met in Moscow simply did not notice him.

Ararat's "Top 33" also included: Norik Mesropyan, Alexander Kovalenko, Hovhannes Zanazanyan, Arkady Andriasyan and Levon Ishtoyan.

In addition to the silver medals of the national championship, "Ararat" was awarded the Cup of the All-Union Central Council of Trade Unions and gold medals of the best trade union team of the USSR.

At the end of the All-Union Championship, Ararat left for Syria and Lebanon, where he played seven friendly matches: Markarov scored seven goals in these matches: the Lebanese national team (3), the Beirut Omenmen (3) and the Aleppo Agli (1) .

CHAPTER 23

1972 Ararat

UEFA Cup 1972/73

Team Prize "Aggressive Guest": 1972

I would especially like to note the arrival of Eduard Markarov in the team. This high-tech player, who is well versed in the game environment, became the organizer of the attacks, the soul of the attack. Performing the difficult role of a conductor, he himself managed to score balls.

                              Stepan Gharibyan

The players of the southern teams have always been distinguished by high technique. So, Eduard Markarov, who played in Ararat, could beat several rivals at once on a tiny patch.

                              Victor Papaev

Ararat started pre-season training in Sochi. The defender of the youth national team of the USSR and "Neftchi" Alexander Mirzoyan trained with the team. His transfer to Ararat had to be approved by the USSR Football Federation. But in Moscow, under pressure from the Baku leadership, they decided otherwise, and the talented football player had to postpone his residence permit in Yerevan for another three years.

In February, "Ararat" flew to Algeria for an international tournament. Andriasyan, Zanazanyan and Ishtoyan, called up to the USSR national team, were absent. The first match with the Algerian team "Sonatrak" from the city of Oran. Regular time ended in a draw: - 3:3, and "Ararat" won on penalties (5:4). Markarov in that match became the author of the first goal. In the final, Eduard did not play due to a reawakened old injury (stretching of the adductor thigh muscle). "Ararat" beat the Romanian team UTA (Arad) with a score of 2:0 and took the main prize of the tournament to Yerevan.

Immediately upon returning home, "Ararat" was facing a cup match with the Leningrad "Dynamo". On the snow-ice lawn, the residents of Yerevan were forced to give way to the frost-resistant Petersburgers. Yes, and the start in the championship of the country "Ararat" failed. Excellent matches (against Moscow "Torpedo" and "Tbilisi" Dynamo) alternated with a weak game with obviously weak opponents. The match with the car factory of the capital was remembered for a big score (5: 0), a beautiful goal by Markarov and ... ruined the anniversary of the captain of the Muscovites Shustikov , which held the 400th match of the national championship that day.The Moscow press paid tribute to the attackers of Ararat, who "demonstrated" figure skating "in the penalty area of the car factory, and suggested that the goal scored by Eduard Markarov in the fall from the summer, probably will be the main contender in the fight for the prize "The most beautiful goal of the season."

In fact, the outcome of the fight was decided by the Yerevan forwards, who showed high individual skills. It would seem that Ararat's attacks, which led to goals, began and developed with a small number of participants, but each forward in the attack acted as if for two thanks to dribling, dribble, accurate passes to partners. Ararat's captain Markarov proved to be the best organizer of the partners' actions, who masterfully scored, by the way, the most beautiful goal of the match. Zanazanyan and Ghazaryan scored two more goals each.

The head coach of the team, Nikolay Glebov, caused the hitch at the start for the following reasons: "Some Ararat players overestimated their" silver success ". They did not fully feel that the second place was a reward for hard work, and was not the result of some outstanding After all, last year all the players shed a lot of sweat in order to achieve the best sports shape, they put a lot of effort into the development of football thinking, they took theoretical studies very seriously.

At the very beginning of the season, the seduction of success prevailed. As a result, the uneven preparation of football players, those who were invited to the national team prepared worse than others. And then, after a cold shower, which hit Ararat with failures in cup matches, the team realized that it was impossible to play badly. It was then that everyone gradually began to show the same diligence as a year ago ... "

To the "Gleb" reasons, I would add the tragic death in a car accident of the stopper of the team Furman Abrahamyan, and the numerous injuries of the leading players, and the coaching miscalculations that clearly manifested themselves at the end of the season. I will focus on one mistake in particular.

On October 6, five rounds before the end of the championship, when things went smoothly for Ararat and the team moved to third place, Yerevan hosted Dnepr. The home team was the first to achieve success, when Andriasyan scored a goal from Markarov's excellent pass. Eight minutes later, the Ukrainian players leveled the score. A few more minutes pass, and after a strong blow from Zanazanyan, the ball bounces to Markarov, who again puts "Ararat" forward. But not for long. Soon "Dnipro" equalized the score again. After the break, the Yerevan team continued to have the territorial and game advantage. The goal was ripe. But Glebov changed Markarov, who played well (?!), and Dnepropetrovsk seized the initiative in the match, and then snatched the victory - 3:2.

Until the end of the championship, Markarov did not get into the starting lineup. Coaching quirks deprived "Ara-rat" of a prize-winning place. Nevertheless, the team on goal difference caught on to fourth place, while only one point separated it from second.

At the end of the season, "Ararat" was awarded the "Aggressive Guest" prize, established by the Ukrainian newspaper "Komsomolskoye Znamya" and awarded to the team that scored the best amount of points on foreign fields. It was doubly pleasant to receive this prize, as the inability to perform on foreign fields has always been the Achilles' heel of "Ararat". True, last year the team changed and performed well at the Moscow stadiums, scoring 7 points out of 8 here. As a joke, Ararat was even nicknamed the “Moscow champion”. In 1972, the team again played excellently in the capital - 9 points out of 10 (!) And gained a solid reputation as a thunderstorm for Moscow clubs. And in total, Yerevan residents collected 16 points on the road (last year - 15). "Ararat" has always been considered a "home" team, and if it were not for failures in the matches at his native "Raz-dan", he, no doubt, could claim the "gold" of the championship.

...Debut in the UEFA Cup "Ararat" was a success. The Cypriot EPA team was beaten twice with the same score 1:0. The first match took place in Larnaca under unusual conditions, where the reduced size field was packed with pebbles and resembled a cement surface. One of Kazaryan's crosses came to the rescue: the ball ricocheted off defender Vasiliou's foot and flew into the EPA goal net. The return match, despite the excellent pitch of Hrazdan, also ended with a modest but still victory for Ararat. Everything was decided by the only well-aimed blow of Ishtoyan.

In these matches, Markarov did not take part, as, indeed, in the first with the Swiss Grasshoppers, in which the Zurich team responded to three goals by Kazarian, Ishtoyan and Andriasyan with only one. In this match, Andriasyan received a second warning and, by the decision of the UEFA Disciplinary Committee, was not allowed to play the return match with Grasshoppers. Glebov was forced to put Markarov in the match, and he proved him wrong with an excellent game. A few days later, Glebov was removed, but the time was not chosen for this, as it was a difficult match with the German Kaiser-Slautern.

But back to the return match with the Swiss. Attacks of "Ararat" were usually built with the expectation of Andriasyan's quick advance. In his absence, Markarov had to step back a little. The attack configuration has changed somewhat, but the usual, simulated combinations have been preserved. The full advantage of "Ararat" was expressed in the number of goals scored against the Swiss (the Yerevaners themselves missed two goals). There were four in total. Two each - Kazaryan and Markarov scored. Ghazaryan scored the first goal with a header after Nazar Petrosyan's cross, and the second after Markarov's pass. In the second half it was Eduard's turn to score. At the 49th minute, Ishtoyan prudently spun the ball to the far post, and Markarov, surrounded by two tall Swiss, managed to “close the post”. His second goal was the result of individual skill. In the 78th minute, Eduard broke into the guests' penalty area, slipped past Ziterle and sent the ball into the far corner of the goal with an accurate shot.

At the next stage of the UEFA Cup, "Ararat" was waiting for the already mentioned German "Kaiserslau-turn". The Union Championship ended, and in order to maintain the playing shape, the Yerevan team went to Stepana-kert, where they played a friendly match with the local "Karabakh".

"... It was assumed that the Germans would strengthen the defense. But no one expected such a frankly personal, deaf defense. Bits followed Markarov relentlessly, Fuchs followed Ishtoyan, Reynders followed Andriasyan, and Schwager played the role of "cleaner". -after all, in the first 15 minutes, the home team managed to create many dangerous chances at the Stabel goal - this happened because Yerevan was ahead of the guests in the speed of passes, and I would say, in the speed of thinking. , and then Ishtoyan and Andriasyan did not realize profitable moments) saved the German footballers from a devastating score.

Yes, "Ararat" won a well-deserved victory. But she could be more impressive. The score 2:0, of course, does not correspond to the course of the match, and this is where the Ararat players should be reproached. They did everything to take the lead. But having gained an advantage of two goals, they began to abuse the individual game, trying to beat five or six opponents. I remember such an episode. Ishtoyan circled two players, entered the goalkeeper's area and began to circle the lying goalkeeper. All this caused an applause on tribunes. But after all, Ishtoyan should have known the price of a goal well - a victory with a larger score could pose an almost impossible task for Kaiserslautern.

In general, it must be said that the residents of Yerevan appeared not that indifference, not that sort of hat-throwing mood before international matches. Team leaders need to pay serious attention to the morale of the players."

Sergey Harutyunyan, who wrote this correspondence, did not know that Nikolai Glebov's resignation order had already been signed and the team's second coach Harutyun Kegeyan would prepare for the second leg of "Ararat".

Tactics for the game (according to the leading players of the team) was chosen incorrectly. Instead of playing on the counterattacks, the residents of Yerevan followed the lead of the Germans, and the game went on "oncoming sails". In comparison with the first match, “Kaiserslautern” in terms of mood, combativeness and aggressiveness turned out to be simply unrecognizable. Dangerous moments arose at one or the other gate. On the 6th minute the Germans open the score, and in four minutes "Ararat" could equalize it. Defenders of the home team played poorly in their own penalty area and Markarov was alone against the goalkeeper. He circled Stabel and calmly sent the ball into the empty net, but defender Schwager managed to hit the ball on the very goal line. A few minutes later, Markarov brought Ishtoyan forward, but the defenders of Kaiserslauter again clearly played.

Alyosha Abrahamyan also worked at full capacity. On the 77th minute midfielder Zeel burst into the penalty area and artfully fell in the fight against Mesropyan. The referee pointed to the 11-meter mark. Penalti clearly realized Huber. He did not miss when breaking through the post-match penalties. Only Zeel made a mistake with the Germans in this series, and we had two of them: A. Harutyunyan and Gevorkyan. Andriasyan, Zanazanyan, Ishtoyan and Markarov did not miss. Defeat in the "football lottery", of course, is a shame. But first of all, we had to blame ourselves for the unrealized scoring chances of the Yerevan match.

Our center forward Eduard Markarov is experiencing his second youth in Ararat. In Baku, he so often heard that his best years were behind him that he almost began to believe in it himself. However, as a true athlete, he wanted to prove that he had not yet said his last word in football. And he proved it. With his skill, Markarov did a lot for the formation of "Ararat". I think that Eduard owes something to our team: we all together helped him find himself again. Markarov is a recognized leader in attack, and there are situations in the life of the team when his word is law. He is the oldest among us. This season, Markarov is haunted by injuries, which is why he could not play at full strength in the final match - after all, he had not played for almost a month. But we do not forget that on the way to the final he made a big contribution to our success, scoring five goals, most of them decisive.

Hovhannes Zanazanyan

In January, it became known that Nikita Pavlovich Simonyan would head Ararat in the new season. The arrival of this highly correct, self-possessed and intelligent person to the team, no doubt, gave hope to all Ararat fans from Yerevan to Los Angeles, from Moscow to Vladivostok. No one doubted the upcoming triumph of the team. It was believed that the gold medal and Ku-bok were already in the team's pocket. It only remained to legitimize the “two-headed” Ararat, that is, to win two main football trophies of the Union at the same time.

“If it wasn’t Simonyan who came to Ararat, but someone else, perhaps there wouldn’t be a “double.” Both in the city and in the team, Nikita Pavlovich enjoyed great prestige. football) that it was white, one had to agree. Even if we (I’ll tell you a secret) sometimes seemed that “it” was rather grayish,” Markarov recalled.

Ararat started their victorious march to the Cup with Alga Frunze — 1:0, 1:0. In the 1/8 finals, Yerevan was waiting for "Neftchi", who played in the first group of the All-Union Championship. Matches with "Neftchi" were to be held in June, and while "Ararat", having rolled up his sleeves, got down to business in the championship.

Markarov did not play in the first matches. The official version is that the football player is not in good enough shape. Stella Markarova adheres to another version: “In fact, there were completely different reasons for that, related to some of the requirements put forward by Edik to the team administration. Thank God, soon everything settled down. Simonyan brought him back to the teams."

God has nothing to do with it. We just lost to Dynamo in Minsk, we couldn't crack the Dnipro defense in the first half of the Yerevan match, so Simonyan decided to replace Markarov (at the 65th minute). The appearance of Eduard was greeted with thunderous applause, and ... immediately Andriasyan scores a goal.

In Alma-Ata, Markarov already played from the first minutes of the meeting and with jewelry passes he contributed to the victory over "Kairat" - 4: 1 (After this victory, "Ararat" came out on top in the championship).

Markarov demonstrated his grandmaster class in the next match against Pakhtakor. “He not only organized the attack, carried the partners forward, but also went out to the most advantageous striking positions. Oh, how he wanted to score the 500th goal of Ararat, but it didn’t work out. Three times he sent the ball from the most advantageous positions with his head Andriasyan scored from the penalty spot and missed three times, and everything was decided by centimetres. He did his job beautifully. He deceived the goalkeeper, went to his favorite position and scored a goal with his head. For some reason, it seems to me that he is the record holder for goals scored with a head ... I must say that Markarov would have played even better if Andriasyan had played more often supplied him with balls from the middle line. Sometimes it even seems that Arkady was struck by the "star fever" virus. He, for example, wants to certainly play as the center of attack, as in the national team. But in the national team he is used in this role because there is no other pronounced center forward, and in "Ararat" even such a master , like Eduard Markarov, is not a 100% center,” wrote Komsomolskaya Pravda correspondent Arsen Kakosyan.

And Yerevan won the next match against Shakhtar in a great style. From the very first minutes of the game, supported by the fans, the Ararat players rushed to the attack. At the 10th minute, Markarov, again with his head, scores a goal, deceiving the goalkeeper. The remaining two goals were scored by Ghazaryan and Ishtoyan not without the participation of Markarov. And Sergei Salnikov wrote in "Football-Hockey": "Recently I had a chance to spend several days with the Ararat team ... Markarov got into shape, he perfectly feels the major, based on good technique, the manner of playing the southerners ... The only thing that can be wish the team: to have a powerful, energetic, pronounced center forward. For now, Markarov and Andriasyan compensate for his absence according to the situation. But this is a palliative."

...Baku lived in anticipation of the cup match with the leader of the All-Union Championship. The day before the match, several hundred fans of the Yerevan team gathered at the Republican stadium waiting for Ararat's training session. So many Armenians have never attended Ararat's Baku trainings. And when the bus with the players drove into the stadium, people, confused and touched by their community (the Armenian theater in Baku was already closed and our compatriots could be seen in such numbers at the same time only on memorial days at the cemetery), did not know how behave. They surrounded the bus and silently watched the Ararat people leaving. Abrahamyan, Bondarenko and other Ararat guards, taking Markarov into the ring, went to the football field. And then the crowd broke through: "A-ra-rat! Mar-ka-ditch! A-ra-rat! Mar-ka-ditch!" Hearing the calls of fellow countrymen, Markarov "left the encirclement" and, juggling the ball, stepped onto the football pitch. Like a real artist, he did wonders, throwing the ball from head to foot, then to his knee and shoulder. And so several times. He gave a solo concert of football art, thanking his many fans for their loyalty.

Usually, at the request of the leadership of Azerbaijan, Markarov did not play against Neftchi in Baku. This time, their appeal had no effect, since "Ararat" was coached by Simonyan, and he decided - Edika to play, and the team here in Baku, to show what the Armenians are capable of!

From the first minutes "Neftchi" rushed forward, but his attacks were chaotic and ineffective. The Ararat team didn't go for an aggravation, they rolled the ball around the field in the hope that sooner or later their class and skill would have an effect. And they waited. The moment of truth came at the beginning of the second half. A cleverly played free kick allowed Markarov to be left alone with Kramarenko. Eduard reluctantly, as if apologizing to a long-term comrade, threw the ball into the left corner of the goal, hugged the unlucky goalkeeper for a moment and trotted to the center of the field under the stormy greetings of the western stand, which, according to tradition, was filled with Armenians. "Neftchi" tried to do something else, but there was some kind of doom in his actions. The players did not seem to believe that it was possible to defeat the formidable Ararat. This psychological depression bound the team hand and foot. And it was not difficult for the Yerevanians to maintain a minimal advantage in the score until the end of the match.

The first half of the return game in Yerevan actually predetermined the exit of "Ararat" in the 1/4 finals of the USSR Cup. Baku residents responded to two goals by Zanazanyan and Bondarenko with only one. Well, the second half was more like a kind of show. The residents of Yerevan seemed to have agreed among themselves not to give the ball to the opponent until the end of the game, and, like billiard players, they began to roll the ball on the green lawn. Having lulled the enemy's vigilance in this way, the Araratians from time to time changed the pace and carried out sharp attacks, the soul and organizer of which was Markarov. At one of these moments, he made his signature pass, which was once compared with the actions of a slalomist, bypassed four (!) opponent defenders at a speed, deceived the goalkeeper and rolled the ball into an empty net.

... Matches with "Dynamo" (in Moscow) and CSKA (in Yerevan) "Ararat" finished the first round of the championship. The "Champion of Moscow" of the last two years confirmed its title by beating the capital's teams with the same score 1:0 - the author of these goals was the unfading Markarov. His Moscow goal was magnificently molded. Jumping over the tall Dynamo defenders, he intercepted Ishtoyan's pass in the air and sent the ball into the goal with his head (again with his head!) Alexander Kiknadze wrote about this time and about this match in his latest book, The Expected Schemer: “Markarov began to play in Ararat. months, one observer remarked: "You might think that Markarov spent his whole life at Ararat, so he merged with the team."

On July 1, 1973, two leaders of the USSR championship, Ararat and Dynamo, met in Moscow. Not long before that, Dynamo, according to all the rules, put CSKA players on the shoulder blades, who were at the very top of the standings. We scored three goals, didn't concede a single one, and entered the game with the residents of Yerevan, full of ambitious desires.

Markarov was followed with four eyes. He fell either eight or ten times. Got up. Continued to play. Waiting for your moment! The ball went to the right. Markarov got ahead, deceived, beat two defenders and sent such a ball into the goal from the summer that the stadium groaned - from grief and delight.

When Ararat won the title of champion and the USSR Cup in 1973, I was not just happy for the young talented team and its first-class coach Nikita Simonyan ... I was also happy because it helped to reveal the rare talent of a football player in whom I believed for a long time " .

“After the match, on the sidelines, comparisons of the game of Armenian football players with the game of the Brazilians were heard. They, they say, are more similar to the South Americans in the manner of playing than our other teams. A flattering comparison, not without foundation. on the field you will find a "stranger". Everything is similar - temperament, addiction to feint, high-speed dribbling. All these qualities are to some extent characteristic of Ishtoyan's partners. And it is very good that Armenian football, without losing its face in our multinational football, came to its forefront." (Andrey Starostin).

"In 1971, Ararat did not become a champion, although it was close to it. But it left a vivid impression, and with it the hope for the emergence of another good class team. Now we can assume that Ararat did not deceive expectations. Three Years of testing with prejudice is a period quite sufficient for such an approval. Over the years, the team has retained and multiplied the features - characteristic, perhaps, of one of them - of an openwork elegant style of play. At the same time, the main provisions of the tactics of modern football and in defense were not forgotten. , and especially in the attack, which is evidenced by the high performance of "Ararat" (Viktor Dubinin) .

In the first round "Ararat" took the lead, the team broke away from the pursuers by four points.

After victories over "Pakhtakor" - 3:2 (in Tashkent) and "Dynamo" Tbilisi - 3:0, the gap increased to five points.

The match against Tbilisi took place with the overwhelming advantage of "Ararat". Already in the first minutes of the match, the Yerevan team inflicted as many blows on Dynamo's goal as you sometimes don't see in the whole game. Ararat's attackers staged a "kochari" (temperamental male group dance) in front of the guests' gates and so exhausted the Tbilisians that they could hardly keep up with the rapid movements of the Yerevan attackers.

Markarov opened the score in the match. The ball after his biting hit touched Khurtsilava and flew into the corner of the goal. More than once I noticed that when "Ararat" tuned in to Markarov's wave, a wonderful melody came out. It was the same in this match. This was the case in almost all of Markarov's matches with Georgian teams preaching technical, open football. In the other two goals, Markarov's participation was the most active. I remember the second one, when Eduard freed himself from the guardian with a feint and, with an impeccable pass, brought Zanazanyan to the ball. Eduard could have scored one more goal, but for some reason the ball hit the goal post from close range.

In the subsequent four matches of the championship, Ararat failed to win, and Markarov scored a goal in two of them (against Dnepropetrovsk and Kiev).

But in the cup matches, luck accompanied the Yerevanians. In the quarter-final "Ararat" "stumbled" on the national champion "Zorya" Voroshilovgrad and outplayed it in the sum of two meetings - 2:0 and 0:1. The first match in Yerevan was won thanks to goals from Ishtoyan and Markarov. V. Vinokurov, analyzing the cup matches, noted: "Ararat's game in the attack became especially interesting when center forward Markarov got into shape and connected the midfield with the attack. The point is not only that for several matches in a row he has not leaves the field without a goal, but in the fact that, thanks to his clear, connecting actions, two fast wingers, Ishtoyan and Kazaryan, and all the midfielders were included in the combination game.

The first semi-final match with "Dnipro" was played by the Yerevan team on the road. The game was broadcast by the Central Television and the commentator repeated endlessly, "that you must not lose sight of Markarov for a second. The veteran of Yerevan is playing very dangerously." As soon as he said this phrase again, Edward really scored a goal. Outwardly, it might not seem very spectacular to some, but I would classify this goal as one of the “golden ten” goals scored by Ararat. Finding himself in the penalty area in a very difficult situation, Markarov received a pass and instantly made the right decision: he threw the ball with the outside of his foot into the right corner of the goal, just like throwing a stone, because there was no time to hit. For a strike, preparation was necessary, it was necessary to turn around ... Apparently, Simonyan means such situations when he talks about the ability to extract the maximum benefit from the moment.

In Markarov, there was always an abundance of courage, which is most valued in the game and without which a beautiful match will not work at all. Depending on the situation and mood, Edward's courage spills out, and we become witnesses of a football fiesta, commensurate with the gala concerts of world-famous tenors or pop stars.

Markarovsky's courage was present in all cup matches, and in seven matches he scored five goals against opponents. After the second match with Dnipro, the captain of Ararat Hovhannes Zanazanyan said in an interview with journalists: “I am glad that Markarov is experiencing his second youth. excellent performance."

Unfortunately, shortly after the matches with Dnipro, Markarov fell ill and had to miss several calendar matches. Eduard went to the final game with the people of Kiev not quite healthy.

October 10, Moscow. Luzhniki are about two-thirds full. Armenian speech is heard all around. Compatriots came to cheer for "Ararat" from all over the Union and even from abroad. No one doubted the success of the Yerevan team. There was such a ditty among the fans: "Even the Armenian bath attendants, everyone is sure in advance: the Cup will be in Yerevan!"

From the very first minutes of the game, the people of Kiev began to put pressure on the more technical southerners all over the field. Our defenders got nervous and made several mistakes. As a result of one of them, a penalty kick was awarded to Abrahamyan, who played well, which was clearly converted by Kolotov. The conceded ball “woke up” the Ararat players, helped to relieve nervous tension, and they started playing their own, combinational, sparkling game. The people of Kiev calmed down and began to play to keep the account.

Simonyan, instead of the tired Bondarenko and Markarov (after his illness, it was difficult for Eduard to withstand the tension of the whole match), he releases Pogosyan and Kazaryan. The initiative is completely on the side of the Yerevan people. The Ukrainians are pressed to their gates. Goal is brewing. And then Sevidov decides to strengthen his defense by replacing Blokhin and Buryak with Zuev and Kondratov.

Two minutes remain until the end of the second half, and as a result of the last assault on the gates of Samokhin, Ishto-yan equalizes the score. An additional thirty minutes are assigned. "Ararat" is still attacking, and in the 103rd minute Ishtoyan scores the second goal. 2:1! “The victory is special, not ordinary, worthy of our Cup, in the history of which, let’s face it, there are not so many such dramatic finals. they had enough for that, because the game obviously didn't go well at first, but the Cup will thank Ararat for being faithful to its principles of fighting to the end and winning the attack."

Immediately after the final whistle, all-Armenian celebrations began in Moscow and Yerevan, in Baku and Tbilisi, in all corners of the planet where the "children of Hayk" lived. Cognac flowed like a river in the Luzhnikov stands. Speeches and toasts continued on the way from the stadium. As expected, Armenikend and Zavokzalnaya triumphed: firecrackers and flares flew up into the sky, roads were blocked and transport (including city transport) was allowed through only after the signals in honor of the victory of "Ararat".

“What happened on that cup night in Yerevan?! Cars circled the central square, drowning out the crystal murmur of a musical fountain with the roar of horns. Wine flowed like water in a fountain, everyone would be friends, everyone was happy, everyone sang, and some - who danced in the streets and squares, - recalled the Leningrad journalist Alexei Samoilov. - On the walls of houses that are not protected by the state as architectural monuments, someone's hands inscribed: "Simonyan, Ishtoyan, Markarov."

On the same, or maybe the next day, the Central Committee of the Komsomol of Armenia showed me a congratulatory telegram to "Ararat" from the North Pole, more precisely, from one of our Arctic stations; in the newspaper "Physic-culturalist of Armenia" they said that fourteen thousand letters had come to the team after winning the Cup. They wrote from everywhere - from the Far East, from Ukraine, from Siberia, Moldova, Moscow, Leningrad, Tajikistan ... "

CHAPTER 25

1973-1974 "Ararat"

1973 "Ararat" - Champion of the USSR

Eduard Markarov - No. 2 in the list of the best football players of the USSR in 1973

Eduard Markarov receives the title of Honored Master of Sports

In our team, only one Markarov could be unconditionally called an "artist" in the good sense of the word.

                                                                                                Arsen Kakosyan

Miniature "tonkach" Markarov moved to "Ararat". And in winning championship medals in the seventy-third third, he undoubtedly played the first violin.

                     Alexander Nilin

Having finished with the Cup, let's return to the national championship in mid-August, when Ararat lost a five-point lead, allowing Dynamo Kyiv to lead the championship race. Now the people of Kiev were ahead of "Ararat" by a point. But the Ukrainians did not rejoice for long. Already in the next round, "Ara-rat" restored the status quo and helped him in this ... Moscow "

"Ararat" beat "Kairat" (4:0) five days later and again became the leader of the championship. Markarov's goal in this meeting turned out to be 114th in the standings of the Fedotov Club, which allowed him to enter the top ten most accurate forwards in the country.

Glimpses of "gold" medals became visible after the victory of "Ararat" on a visit over the current champion of the country Voroshilovgrad "Dawn".

"... An interesting attacking link Markarov-Andriasyan was also remembered in this match. Starting to carry out joint operations with Markarov, the leader of the Yerevan midfield with a terrible blow from afar, from which the ball crashed into the crossbar in the blink of an eye and ricocheted into the ground, as if said: "I'm going to you!". And this couple played at full power, preparing offensive bridgeheads for each other, distracting and taking away the defenders, using techniques such as leaving the ball to a partner in oncoming traffic, and " crossing", and throwing back. Kuksov and Malygin, who played against this pair, barely had time to "pass their highly maneuverable wards to each other, and at times they completely lost them, and then Zhuravlev, V. Kuznetsov or someone else hurried to the rescue, so that the common efforts to eliminate the danger."

In the next two matches, "Ararat" put the capital's "Spartak" (in Yerevan) and "Torpedo" (in Moscow) on the shoulder blades. “Yerevan outplayed the Muscovites with technical ease, especially in the second half. The hosts once again demonstrated the ability to play and attack in a variety of ways. Ararat knows how, when the situation requires, to use a closed variation with sharp counterattacks. And for the most part, the leader smashes opponents in the open in combat, using long passes, flank breakthroughs, individual actions, dribble, playing the "wall", long-range strikes, that is, all attack methods that can be used in combination only with high technical training and ingenuity. occupy.

"Spartak" could not withstand the onslaught of "Ararat" at the moment when the leader used his entire set of attacking means.

"Ararat" won confidently. At the finish line, the leader will probably be able to further strengthen the game if center forward Markarov enters the ranks after an injury. In the match against Torpedo, this place was played by Andria-hsiang, who, undoubtedly, brings the team more benefit when he plays in the middle line.

... Ararat arrived in Donetsk with the newly won USSR Cup. For tired after the final match, the Yerevan residents, a zero result with Shakhtar was tantamount to a victory.

Yerevan met its heroes. The airfield was filled with fans. “I haven’t seen anything like this yet, and, probably, I won’t see it anywhere else,” Markarov recalled. “We land at the airport, and there the table is already laid. more and more. It's usually a 40-minute drive, but then we drove for four hours, at least. There are a lot of people everywhere. If it were possible, they would have carried our bus in their arms to the very base. Such a thing cannot be forgotten!"

In the next round, "Ararat" beat "Dynamo" Minsk (2:1) at home, and the people of Kiev make a draw in Lvov. Two steps from the finish line, the leaders are once again separated by only a point. Yerevan residents, in order to become champions of the Union for the first time, had to win the remaining two matches of CSKA and Zenit.

Moscow met "Ararat" with snow and cold. Belokamennaya bristled, anticipating that the upcoming match with CSKA would be hotter than the Spanish bullfight. In this match, the Ararat players had the game initiative throughout the match. “It was noticeable how cunningly Markarov designs attacks, how active Andriasyan is, how Ishtoyan’s game is going. There will be a goal soon. - as much as you like. Markarov hit beautifully. He beat the defenders of CSKA so gracefully that if Edik had scored a goal, perhaps he would have become the most beautiful of the season. And a few minutes before the end, Kazaryan missed from the most advantageous position ... "

It so happened that "Ararat" entered the match with "Zenith" already in the rank of the national champion. A few minutes before the start of the game, from a radio report broadcast from Alma-Ata, it became known that the people of Kiev lost on penalties to the home team and finally buried their hopes for the highest awards. Nevertheless, the match with “Zenith” has not lost its sporting sharpness and a spectacular success.

Time after time, the attack of "Ararat" rolled on the gates of the guests. Kazaryan and Petrosyan successfully acted on the flanks. All the time Markarov, Andriasyan, Zanazanyan were aimed at the gate. Zanazanyan opened the score in the 27th minute. The ball after his powerful blow flew into the top corner of the gate. It was Ararat's 50th goal of the season and Zanazanyan's 50th goal in the national championships. At the beginning of the second half, Markarov scores the second goal in a beautiful jump with his head. It seemed that the fate of the match was decided. But the Leningraders think differently, and over the next five minutes they score two goals and level the score. Eduard Markarov saved the upcoming festive manifestation from failure. At the 59th minute, he beat his guardian at the gates of Zenit and put a winning point in this match. "And Ararat won with a score of 3: 2. The stadium literally exploded. I must admit that I have never seen such a manifestation of feelings before. Whether the fans, folk ensembles poured out on the field - everyone believed in victory, prepared for it, thundered language, dances began, - recalls N.P. Simonyan. - The streets were crowded with people. They walked, sang, probably until four in the morning. Football players, I do not exaggerate, were ready to receive in every house, all the doors were thrown open for them. braziers appeared on the sidewalks, the smell of barbecue floated. People carried jugs of wine out of their houses, not sparing supplies for the sake of such an occasion. They expressed their delight in the most diverse ways - they drove, honking, in cars, sang songs ... "

"Listen, if you forget in thirty years, in what year you came to us, then simply write:" It was when "Ararat" made the first double." Yerevan on October 28, 1973, - Alexey Samoilov tells about that memorable day. The crowd is carrying us to the stadium. Above our heads, a banner with yard-long letters is bubbling in the wind: "Ararat" - the star team. "Ararat" is a team of stars. "And in parentheses, in smaller letters, a reference to the author - Nikolai Ozerov.

"Razdan" is buzzing. "Hrazdan" eats ice cream, peels seeds. "Razdan" looks around himself and does not hide the fact that he likes both the silhouette of the USSR Cup (they cut the grass so skillfully in the center of the field) and the huge gold medal hanging from the upper tier - the work of the fans of the foil rolling shop of the aluminum plant.

... The game was as temperamental as it was correct. Markarov scored a goal, referred to in football reports as a handsome goal. But Zinchenko also responded with a handsome goal... The Zenit players were the first to congratulate the Ararat players on their brace - they shook hands, hugged, which caused a flurry of delight in the stands. "Ararat" moved along the path with a crystal vase and gold medals, and "Hrazdan" with all the might of his heroic lungs accompanied his every step of fame along this circle of honor. It was an unprecedented concert for voice, zurna, drum, trumpet, accordion and a number of national instruments unknown to me. On the field, dozens of professional dancers were chanting something incendiary .... "Razdan" no longer looked around himself - there was no time; he sang, danced and - suddenly blazed: burning torches from old newspapers in the hands of the fans raised to the sky.

With "Ararat" on our lips, we flowed from the stadium - past the cellars of the world-famous cognac trust, apparently named after our favorite team, past the houses, from the balconies of which we were greeted as victors; past cafes and restaurants, it was impossible to get there anyway ... "Ara-rat!" "Si-mo-nyan!" "I-shto-yan!"

It’s already the first hour of a new, post-football day, and the thunder of victory is still heard, and the fans are all waving posters “Well, wait a minute, Ajax!”, “Well, wait a minute, Brazil!”, Sing and dance. For the third hour in a row they dance men at the corner of Sayat-Nova and Abovyan avenues. Throats hoarse. Palms and sides hurt. Joy, it turns out, is exhausting, like hard, overwhelming work ... "

On November 12 at 19.00 at the State Academic Theater after G. Sundukyan, a gala evening dedicated to the awarding of gold medals of USSR champions and numerous prizes won by the team began:

- "Big score" - the weekly "Football-Hockey" for the largest number of victories with a difference of at least three goals. Yerevan residents had six such victories.

- "Grigory Fedotov" - for the highest performance.

- "For the best goal difference" - the Ukrainian magazine "Start".

- "Aggressive Guest" - founded by the Ukrainian newspaper "Komsomolskoye Znamya".

The winner of the magazine "Change" - the best debutant of the season - was Armen Sargsyan, who, on behalf of the coaches, was patronized by Markarov for the entire season.

On this evening, the head of the Football Department, L. Zenchenko, announced the decision of the USSR Sports Committee on awarding, as he put it, the title of Honored Master of Sports to the oldest player in Soviet football, Eduard Markarov!

By tradition, on the eve of the New Year, the weekly "Football-Hockey" conducted a poll among 121 journalists of the Union to determine the best football player of the past season. Eduard Markarov rounded out the top five in this list. Markarov also entered the list of 33 best players of the 1973 season approved by the Presidium of the USSR Football Federation. This time he was named second among the central strikers of the country.

... The 1974 season "Ararat" met in Lebanon. When the team arrived in Beirut, Armenians from all over the country had already gathered there. The players were not allowed to get off the plane, they picked them up and carried them to the bus. The Lebanese government and public gave "Ararat" a terrific welcome. Friendly matches alternated with banquets and gala evenings. The first match against the combined team of two Armenian clubs in Beirut - "Omenmen" and "Omenetmen" was won by the Yerevan team with a score of 4:1. The next match our team "gave" (0:1) at the request of the Soviet embassy in Lebanon to the pro-government team "Nejmi". The embassy decided to support official Beirut in such a "strange" way. The fact is that it was 1974 - the height of the confrontation between the great powers, Israel and the Arab world, the Maronites (Christians who speak Arabic) and the Arabs of Lebanon. After the meeting with Nezhmi, Ararat's hands were untied, and he easily dealt with the Lebanese national team 4:1, Beirut Racing - 3:0 and Trypillya Salam Riyadabad - 3:0. In these matches, Markarov became the author of five goals.

Returning home, "Ararat" immediately joined the fight for the USSR Cup. Yaroslavl "Shinnik" was defeated in two meetings - 0:0, 2:1, and Markarov became the author of the first goal.

In the 1/8 finals, the rivals of Yerevan, as in the past year, were the players of "Neftchi". The first match in Yerevan for "Ararat", despite the absence of four main players (Andriasyan, Kovalenko, Sarkisyan, Martirosyan), was easy. Two goals by Bondarenko and Zanazanyan made it possible to have a serious start before the return match.

I was lucky enough to be present at many Ararat matches in the Union and abroad, but, believe me, I have never met such a frenzied excitement at any stadium as I did during the second match in Baku. Of course, the arrival of champions and holders of the USSR Cup in any city is an event. Moreover, "Neftchi" has not played in the top league for two years, and football fans miss big football. And if we add to this that "Ararat" has always been a good irritant for the Azerbaijanis, then we can understand the number of banners and flags fluttering around the entire perimeter of the stadium, with the exception of the four western sectors (1-4), which "belonged" to the Armenians. “They meet Ararat,” Baku compatriots joked, “as they probably wouldn’t have met Bayern in Yerevan. We didn’t imagine then that exactly in a year the famous Bayern would be defeated in Yerevan by Ararat.

And in the second match, due to the injury of a number of players, the Yerevan team played in a weakened squad. Markarov did not play either. Simonyan this time agreed with the pleas of the Baku rulers and did not put Edik up for the match. The stadium did not fall silent throughout the game. He changed the tone in the 82nd minute, when Andriasyan equalized the score. Now only in the Armenian sectors was heard: "A-ra-rat!", "A-ra-rat ..." The jubilation was interrupted by a hail of stones flying from the southern platform. Where such a number of stones (!?) appeared in the sectors of the stadium, one could only guess. In a moment, the "trophy shells" flew in the opposite direction. Between the "belligerent" stands formed a void. The police were at a loss and did not know how to behave. The task was facilitated by the referee's whistle, announcing the end of the match. A draw on the field and a draw in the stands.

In the first quarter-final match against Shakhtar Donetsk, Markarov saved the day when, six minutes before the end of the game, with the score 1:1, bursting into the penalty area of the guests, he scored the winning goal with a strong blow. In Donetsk, the Yerevan team lost on all counts (0:3), and a distressed Simonyan calmly analyzed the reasons for this defeat at a press conference: "The team is still in captivity of the past year's joys."

“In the championship following our double, the team took fifth place,” recalls Nikita Pavlovich Simonyan. “Could we perform as successfully or almost the same as in the previous season? I asked myself this question many times, many times I analyzed everything, and today, rewinding the time that has passed, I can confidently say: we could, and it would have been easier to win the championship.

...Unfortunately, friction also arose in the leadership of the team, which also interfered with work. I suffered mainly because of the squabbles that arose within the team and around it. And the fifth place is not so bad. It's a shame that the team played below their capabilities....Players who think they are great, sharply reduce their demands on themselves. And the soccer ball that brought glory immediately punishes them."

Markarov was more concise:  “It’s categorical to say that we could take gold again, I won’t, but in my opinion, we could have been in the top three. Unfortunately, after the championship season we got a little arrogant. We began to take more liberties in the game. could not but affect the position of the team. "

Eduard scored five goals in the 74th championship. The first two - at the gates of CSKA, one of them - in the fall on the fly. The remaining three goals against Dynamo Moscow, Zorya and CSKA (in the second round) Mar-karov scored with his head. Perhaps one of the statisticians is counting the goals scored by Eduard with his head. It seems to me that they are at least 50% of all the opponents scored by him against Ararat.

The score for Markarov's goals could have been great if it weren't for the injuries that tortured the scorer. In the first round match with Zorya, he was "shoeed", and he was forced to miss five calendar games. Markarov also missed four matches after an injury in the first match with the Irish Celtic.

The Irish club "Ararat" defeated (2:1, 5:0) in the 1/8 finals of the European Champions Cup, and a little earlier, in the 1/16 finals, Yerevan defeated (2:0, 4:2) the Norwegian "Viking". The hero of these two matches was again Markarov, who scored five goals out of six!

After the first match, Norwegian coach Stewart Williams said that Ararat is a well-coordinated, technical team, and that Markarov is especially dangerous, whose game made a great impression on Norwegian fans.

Williams was even more brief after the second match, in which Eduard became the author of three goals: "Mar-karov - prima!"

Edward's goals were for all tastes. He scored the first from a difficult position (pushed into the goal) after Gevorkyan's cross. The second - closing the pass of Ishtoyan, in the fall, with a beautiful headbutt. The hat-trick for Markarov was helped by the same Ishtoyan. Edward sent his prudent pass with a sharp-smart heel kick!

In November, at the end of the national championship, "Ararat" flew to California, where he played four matches with the Mexican teams "Jalisco" (1:0, 2:1) and "Toluca" (1:1, 6:2). In the last match with the Guadalajara Toluca, the first goal was on Markarov's account.

A surprise awaited Eduard and all Ararat residents on November 27 in Fresno, where they were elected honorary citizens of the city.

Ararat ended the American tour with a mini-football match in Providence, where they outplayed (10:9) the Oceanians team.

CHAPTER 26

1974-1975 "Ararat"

1975 USSR Cup Winner

European Cup

Eduard Markarov is the top scorer of the European Champions Cup

Team Prize "For the will to win": 1974

Many players at the beginning of their journey relied on valiant prowess, but later, in the declining years of football, they acquired tactical acumen and even became the organizers of the game. Such a transformation was experienced by Malofeev, Mamedov, Markarov...

                                                                                                            Sergei Salnikov

Now, in the entire major league, with the exception of Markarov, Fedotov, Andriasyan, Muntyan, who are fluent in rational technique, there is simply no one to single out.

                           Alekper Mammadov

In "Ararat" they fantasize, cunning, dodge Markarov and Andriasyan, giving their team intelligence and grace.

                                                                                                      Lev Filatov

"Ararat" started training on January 5 under the guidance of a new head coach. The place of Simonyan, who left the team, was taken by the honored coach of the USSR Viktor Aleksandrovich Maslov.

Ararat has never started the season so early. Already on March 5, the first match of the 1/4 finals of the European Champions Cup with the best team in the world, Bayern Munich, was coming. On the Black Sea coast, the residents of Yerevan held several control matches with the leading teams of the country, the first and Olympic teams of the USSR. In these matches, the main team was played. On the second attempt, Alexander Mirzoyan managed to overcome the ban of the Baku authorities. He nevertheless became the stopper of Ararat, and the coaches had high hopes for him.

While ours were preparing for a duel on the soggy fields of Sochi, the football season in Germany was in full swing. Bayern were in good shape, which Ararat experienced from the very first minutes of the Munich meeting. Throughout the match, the Germans had an undoubted territorial and game advantage. The calculation for a strong defense and quick counterattacks did not work for ours, because. the three midfielders played extremely unsuccessfully. The Swede Andersson and the Dane Hansen, who played in the "Bavaria" fettered the actions of Andreasyan and Ishtoyan, and Markarov almost always found himself surrounded by two or three opponents. Bayern's midfielders imposed a fast, moving game on their opponents, forcing them to act close to their own penalty area almost all the time.

Most of the match "Bayern" attacked unsuccessfully. The defense of "Ararat" acted diligently and collectedly, Abrahamyan played reliably. 12 minutes before the end of the match the score was still zero. But then, within five minutes, the Germans score two goals and snatch victory. The second goal was offensive: Torstensson saw that Abrahamyan stepped forward and threw the ball over him with a twisted shot into the upper corner of the goal. The only mistake of the goalkeeper of Yerevan made Ararat's chances of reaching the semi-finals problematic. After the match, at a press conference, V. Maslov expressed the idea that in two weeks "Ararat" would be able to significantly improve "in condition".

And he turned out to be right. From the very beginning of the return match, the Yerevan team went on the attack with almost the entire team. Gradually the attacks of "Ararat" become more and more sharp. Despite Andersson's tight guardianship, Andriasyan dominated the center of the field and on the outskirts of the Bayern penalty area. Schwarzenbeck and Beckenbauer had Markarov in their clutches, but the smart strategist began to take away the Bayern stoppers, freeing up space for teammates. At the 34th minute, Ishtoyan on the right, almost from the side line, on horseback, delivered the ball across the entire penalty area to the other edge, from where Kazarian headed it to the penalty area. At that moment, Markarov began to take Schwarzenbeck and Beckenbauer away. Sensing something was wrong, the “football Kaiser” leaves the center forward of Yerevan and rushes into the fight for the top ball with Andriasyan, but is a little late, and Arkady in a beautiful head jump sends the ball into the corner of the goal to the left of Mayer.

The advantage of "Ararat" in the match was more than noticeable. The Yerevanians played it at a fast pace, in a style reminiscent of their best high season performances. But still, at the end of the match, they lacked freshness and a supply of physical strength. Ghazaryan had to leave the field, giving way to debutant midfielder Khoren Hovhannisyan. “I went out on the field, and next to me were Markarov, Andriasyan, Zanazanyan, and on the contrary – Beckenbauer, Muller, Mayer ... and the crowded “Razdan”. I was very worried, not everything worked out, but it was easy and pleasant to play: after all, such partners were nearby," the young football player said after the game. Due to an injury (broken arm), Za-nazanyan, who played actively and wisely, had to leave the field. Araratians continued to attack until the last minute. For a while, panic began in the defense of Bayern. In these moments, the formidable center forward of the Germans Gerd Muller was even in the role of a free defender. But we failed to score the second goal.

"A 1-0 victory is nevertheless pleasant and will certainly go down in the history of Ararat. After all, they defeated the winner of the European Champions Cup." (Oleg Kucherenko).

"Yerevans, in my opinion, have the right to be proud of their performance in the second match. A convincing victory was won over one of the strongest clubs in the world. We can safely write Ararat's victory over Bayern in the second match as an asset of our football, although according to the results two games Yerevan had to give way to their eminent rivals." (Valery Vinokurov).

At a press conference immediately after the match, Bayern coach Detmar Kramer admitted: “ We have no moral right to celebrate a common victory. "In two weeks he got on his feet, but we seemed to sit down."

Preparing for the match with Bayern, Ararat did a great job at the end of winter and got into shape early. Thanks to this, the residents of Yerevan managed to start in the championship and the USSR Cup. In the fight for the Crystal Cup "Ararat" defeated the Kuibyshev "Wings of the Soviets" (4:1), Lviv "Karpaty" (1:0), Moscow "Lokomotiv" (1:1, 5:4 on 11-meter), Tbilisi " Dynamo (3:1) and Voroshilovograd Zorya (2:1).

"Ararat" beat railwaymen in Moscow in a dramatic duel only in the 11-meter series. "The tactical formation of the teams and their playing manners were so different that it was interesting to watch how the rivals tried to outwit each other. Let's say the defender Kamzulin played personally against Markarov, and his defensive partners acted in their own zones. Yerevan residents did not want to agree with this , and Markarov went into the depths, and Andriasyan moved forward. As soon as the defenders of Lokomotiv rebuilt, which they did, by the way, clearly and skillfully, the leaders of Ararat again started tactical "games". In attacking maneuvers, the stopper Mirzo- yan, who only in the first half threatened the goal of Miles three times. It was felt that the attacking moves of Mirzoyan were rehearsed and well received by partners. Once the central defender of "Ararat" even went one on one with the goalkeeper of the Muscovites and managed to throw the ball through him into the empty Only the selfless throw of the captain of Lokomotiv Ryakhovsky, who hit the ball in the fall with his head, saved the home team from a goal.

From the very first minutes of the match against Tbilisi, the Araratians rushed to the attack, like an angry bull on the red cape of the bullfighter. As always, Markarov and Andriasyan stood out for their skill. Each of their combinations or transfers caused an instant explosion of passions and emotions in the stands. Persecuted by cheerleaders, the residents of Yerevan pressed the guests to their penalty box and led a methodical siege of the gates. On the left flank of the attack, Petrosyan was the real master of the situation. Dzodzuash-vili could not cope with him and was later replaced. The hosts managed to realize their great advantage only in the second half. At the 47th minute, after a multi-way combination, Markarov opened the scoring with the filing of Ishtoyan. Markarov could have scored a second goal, but did not use his mesmerizing pass and one-on-one with Gogia. The second goal was scored by Poghosyan, when on the 58th minute he broke the defense of the guests and sent the ball irresistibly into the goal. The third goal was held by Petrosyan, taking advantage of the mistake of the Tbilisi defenders.

The final between Ararat and Zorya Voroshilovograd was perfectly described by Lev Filatov: “The appearance of both of these teams in the final could not be surprising: after all, they are ex-champions of the country and have been setting the tone for five years already. .

... The match started well for Zorya. On the 8th minute, Gevorkyan fouls to the right of the goal, about twenty meters away. Free kick. Zhuravlev gave a short pass to Kuznetsov, who fired hard and accurately into the far corner past the petrified goalkeeper Abrahamyan.

It seems, what could be better: in the reserve is a goal, obtained quickly and relatively easily! And it was here that the insidious goblet grin flashed. Central defender Malygin, being on the left flank, decided to defuse the situation by sending the ball into the center of his own penalty area, counting on the goalkeeper and his partners. And struck. But the blow went wrong, to the side. Tkachenko ran out, but ended up empty-handed, and Andriasyan took possession of the ball as a gift. He still managed to get through, turn around comfortably and then already shot at the goal, where, hoping to protect them, both the goalkeeper and the defenders rushed headlong. Andriasyan, like a true master, did not rush, but did everything in the best possible way, for sure, and softly threw the ball into the upper corner, so that he could not hit any of the rescuers in flight.

After that, as usual, the course of the game turned abruptly. "Ararat" managed to turn its moral advantage into a gaming one, Andriasyan and Markarov somehow imperceptibly got their freedom, and then "Zarya" had to wait for trouble, these two can actually do a lot, and if they are "lost", the punishment is inevitable.

Against the general background of high spirits, the offending Gevorkyan cheered up and twice, as an active midfielder from the right, went to the goal, and Tkachenko pulled the ball out from under the crossbar after his strikes. And now, after the stadium noted a beautiful throw of the goalkeeper, bent like a bow, with an ovation, and it still subsided, a goal was scored. The dexterous Markarov sensitively responded to the serve from the right and sent the ball not much, but tochnehonko to the bottom corner. It might have seemed to Tkachenko that the ball would pass by, he did not move, but Markarov's work was jewelry. At this point, “Dawn” was completely upset. And suddenly, the rarest episode: Mesropyan, after a rebound from a foreign player, received the ball, went one on one with the goalkeeper, and on the backswing he was overtaken by a whistle for a break ... Must have been missing some two seconds. Here it is, football time!

Break went “Dawn” in favor. They managed to shift the game to the half of the "Ararat" field, however, obvious, convenient situations for scoring do not arise. Toward the end, Yerevan, having broken through the blockade ring, carried out several beautiful counterattacks, and one day Markarov again, like the time he scored a goal, sent the ball into the far corner, but slightly inaccurately, then Tkachenko responded well to Andriasyan's blow. Ararat's counterattacks looked masterful, unconventional, graceful, and sharp.

"Ararat", in my opinion, had the advantage that Andriasyan and Markarov were in it, who managed to play in the best way, with imagination, actively, seriously, which complemented the team's game well and blossomed it. In a word, we saw a successful combination of individual and collective beginnings, which is one of the eternal secrets of football."

In the following days football experts said a lot of warm things about "Ararat" on the pages of the central newspapers. The legendary goalkeeper and photojournalist Aleksey Khomich also spoke out: "Ararat" deservedly won. Throughout the match, Yerevan had a game advantage. I want to highlight the excellent game of Mirzoyan, Andriasyan and Markarov. Frankly, long before the start of the meeting, I believed in the victory of the Ararat team. It is gratifying that, in addition to strong-willed qualities, they demonstrated high technique and tactically competent play. In my opinion, Ararat is a team with excellent prospects."

Many remarkable games were played by Alexander Mirzoyan in the compositions of Neftyanik, Ararat, Spartak Moscow and the national teams of the Soviet Union. For many of them I happened to watch "live-woo". I consider the final cup match against Zorya the best in Mirzoyan's career. In this match, he succeeded in almost everything. And this is after a serious injury, when he did not fully recover from it, he nevertheless appeared on the field. “Probably many do not know that Sasha went to the final match not quite healthy,” said Ararat captain Arkady Andriasyan. “The injury received in the match with Dnipro made itself felt. But he, overcoming pain, played one of my best matches. Sometimes I just wonder where Sasha has such a sense of position, the ability to understand any situation. I do not envy the attackers who have to play against Mirzoyan. It is very difficult to outwit him, get around him."

The final goals were very spectacular, this is how Markarov commented on them: “Kuznetsov’s kick turned out to be both accurate and, most importantly, unexpected - none of ours could intercept the ball. In my opinion, the goals against Zorya were unexpected for the opponents. "Of course, Malygin made a mistake in the first case, but one cannot fail to note the skill of our captain Arkady Andriasyan - it was not so easy to take advantage of even such a miss by the opponent: first it was necessary to beat the goalkeeper, and then accurately direct the ball into the goal, into which were already standing by the defenders of "Dawn".

Not without the participation of Andriasyan, the second goal was also scored. As a result of a tactical search, Arkady and I managed to confuse the defenders of Malygin and Kuznetsov, I managed to free myself from custody and scored a goal: Martirosyan sent the ball on horseback from the right flank to the 11-meter mark, and Arkady joined the fight with the defenders, and the ball flew to me. Zorya's defender tried to knock me down, but I still managed to break through in the fall into the corner farthest from the goalkeeper ... "

The apotheosis of Markarov's happy August was the recognition of his popular newspaper "Soviet Sport" as the best forward of the month.

Is it worth talking about the skill of Eduard Markarov? He demonstrates something in football that is to be seen and very difficult to describe. Edik is of great benefit to all young players, he teaches them both with his own game and with a hint. I just want to emphasize that he teaches football lessons not only on the field. Young people are drawn to him, and he somehow gradually teaches them football knowledge. He is especially aggressive in cup matches. Edik knows how to score decisive goals.

We have a good interchangeability with him. It's hard for me to explain how it works, but we both always feel who needs to step back, who needs to step forward. Markarov is a dribbler, his first movement, whether with the ball or without the ball, is always false, which means he must receive the ball not just at his feet, but at the moment when he makes the second movement and on the foot with which he makes this movement. His technical arsenal is such that in almost any difficult situation he is able to address the ball to his partners. He scores goals in such positions that arise unexpectedly, because he knows with a sixth sense where the ball will fly, where it will fall.

CHAPTER 27

"Ararat" 1975

Cup Winners' Cup 1975/76

Eduard Markarov - No. 3 in the list of the best football players of the USSR in 1975

Eduard Markarov is certainly a player of the highest class, and it's hard for me to imagine Ararat without him.

                                                                                                      Arkady Andriasyan

“Of the playing football players, only Eduard Markarov is now a member of the Club 100,” wrote Valery Vinokurov, a well-known football columnist for the Football-Hockey weekly. “He has been scoring constantly, regularly, for many years now. his main quality, if it can be for a striker who scores a lot, still some main quality, is the ability to lead the team's game, to be an organizer of combinational actions, a dispatcher, a conductor... We talked with Markarov more than once, and he repeatedly spoke on our pages, but mostly shared the experience of a scorer. In recent conversations with him, I wanted to know how he relates to his second, if not first duty - to create scoring situations for partners.I will try to present the totality of Markarov's thoughts in the form of his monologue :

"If they say, and rightly so, that technical mastery is acquired in childhood and adolescence, then the passing culture, in my opinion, is acquired by a football player throughout his sports life. When I joined the team of masters, I did not differ in the ability to play a creative game "And I still remember how I was struck then by the high culture of passing Yuri Kuznetsov. It was from him that I received excellent passes from which I scored goals. Playing next to such a master, it was simply impossible to freeze in place, not to improve. And I immediately set myself the task: to develop the ability to give a pass that is timely, convenient for a partner and true in plan. They say that it is impossible to learn the latter, that the vision of the field is natural for a football player. Maybe this is so. I'm afraid to argue. But it is also indisputable that you can develop your understanding of the game. And it is absolutely indisputable that you can learn to give such a pass to a partner who would not require extra effort from him, so that after this pass the ball easily lays sitting under a leg convenient for the partner, so that the ball is sent with such force, with which it was difficult for the opponent to intercept it, but for the partner it was easy to master it. I affirm that it is possible to learn this.

But as in any other business, much depends on the character of the person. I have noticed for a long time that there are footballers who are most happy when they themselves score a goal. They cannot be blamed for it. And there are players who are happy when they manage to give a great pass. There are those who are delighted with a subtle, clever pass even when a good pass comes from an opposing player. These are the players who appreciate the pass in football so much, they are somehow especially close to me. And someone who has this attitude towards passing, I am sure, will always make great efforts to master this art. Such players are especially demanding of partners both in training and in the game, because they understand that no matter how beautiful the goals are, they are rare in football, and the constant beauty of the game is created thanks to good passes, a combination draw, which is always based on true pass.

I came from "Neftchi" to "Ararat" already at a fairly mature age. And I easily managed to find a common language with my partners precisely because we have a whole group of players in the team from whom you can get a good pass, who themselves respond to a good pass. In the best seasons for Ararat, it was easy for me to conduct a dispatching game, because Andriasyan, Zanazanyan, and forwards Ishtoyan and Kazaryan tried to find partners, play passes with them, combine team actions with individual ones.

But back to the past. When Banishevsky appeared in the center of Neftchi's attack after the departure of Yuri Kuznetsov, I pulled back a little and began to play the same role that Kuznetsov had previously played. That's when it came in handy that I did not waste time and tried to learn everything I could from Kuznetsov. Our third offensive partner was Tuaev, a typical winger. My main task in cooperation with him was the goal: how to tear him away from the defenders, give him the ball in the gap between the central and extreme defender, so that Tuaev could rush for the ball, and the extreme defender would have to turn around at that moment. Banishevsky's functions boiled down to the fact that he moved a lot at speed along the front of the attack, played well with his head, and could strike on the move with any foot. I constantly had a choice in interaction with him, I could make different decisions, and he understood them.

In a word, it was both pleasant and interesting to interact with Tuaev and Banishevsky. However, I also had difficulties. It turned out that their game largely depended on me, because I had to serve them. I often had no one to get the ball from. I had to look for it, spend a lot of effort, and then sometimes there was not enough freshness to execute the pass the way I wanted, putting my soul into it. True, when Aleskerov was still playing in our midfield, it was easier for me: he himself was looking for me, and the ball sent by him found me. Of those who played in the middle line later, only Gadzhiev could provide such help with a pass, but he was unstable.

It still hurts me that I didn’t manage to try my hand at the national team paired with Banishevsky. Gradually, over the years of playing with him and with Tuaev, our interaction improved so much that I more and more often found myself on the shock line myself, having previously played “wall” with them. But it was then, perhaps, the only way for me to get to the gate. Therefore, a certain number of goals had to be scored from difficult positions, after the ball either bounced in an unexpected direction, or was not accurately beaten off by the opponent, or was not quite accurately addressed to me by a partner. I didn’t have a chance to play in the same squad with Streltsov. Therefore, only from the side I studied his passes and understood that the partners, thanks to his passes in an advantageous position, sometimes even unexpectedly for themselves, apparently should have experienced the same feelings that I once experienced when speaking next to Kuznetsov.

Performances in "Ararat" became a qualitatively new step for me in comparison with "Neftchi". But first, a small digression. Whatever data the nature of the young football player has awarded, he is obliged, first of all, to hone the blow. Unfortunately, I often see young talented football players whose talents have not been developed in children's teams, and I judge this by their shots. But both the goal and the correct pass depend on the blow, because, in the end, the pass is nothing more than a targeted blow. So, when I got to Ararat, I immediately realized that Andriasyan, for example, has a pass culture - a natural quality, but he constantly hones it. Sometimes it seems that Andriasyan overdoes the ball, and in such cases he is criticized for allegedly not giving a timely pass. But after all, he did not give it away, not because he did not see a partner or did not know how to send him the ball. He just doesn't want to make an obvious move, one that his opponents can figure out. Holding the ball, he is looking for a better move, waiting for the partners to create an opportunity for him for a new, more profitable continuation, and even then they will be grateful to him - the ball will not linger with him.

Zanazanyan is distinguished by his honed ability to give a long pass. But, oddly enough, his short pass is worse: he somehow does not calculate the force of impact. And he works on long and short passes a lot. Sometimes his long pass, which turns out to be the second or third touch of the ball in our team, puts me or his other partner one on one with the opposing goalkeeper. At the same time, a favorable moment for scoring appears as if out of nothing.

...The thirty-seventh championship of the USSR "Ararat" began with two victories over "Dnipro" (3:0) and CSKA (1:0, in Moscow). In a match with the Ukrainians, Eduard Markarov scored his 120th goal in the national championships. Watching the actions of Ararat's middle line in the Moscow match against CSKA, I involuntarily thought about how much Markarov gave the team. How much has Andriasyan's passing culture increased. Five years of communication with the great passer did not go unnoticed for Arkady. And in the actions of young Ogane-syan there is much from Markarov. The remarkable "techie" Sergey Salnikov noted in this match that the army's "offensive design looks primitive, since it is built on hastily directed long and often mounted passes, in the hope of tall forwards. And how sometimes one or two intermediate moves are needed to so that the attack acquires logic and genuine, not imaginary sharpness!

Substantially, better than any verbal agitation, this truth was proved throughout the match by Andria-hsiang, Markarov, Petrosyan and young Oganesyan, alternately, sometimes jointly and with equal success, standing on the control watch. The game of the southerners, especially against the background of the stereotyped moves of the Muscovites, looked inventive and picturesque. The contrast was bright and impressive. The fact that each of the controllers, in accordance with the situation, in the blink of an eye changed the duties of a "passer" to a sharp-attacking mission, imparted additional dynamism to the style of the Yerevan residents.

Before the match with Kyiv Dynamo, Oleksandr Kovalenko was seen off. A little later, before the cup game with the “Dawn”, at the whim of Maslova, her captain Hovhannes Zanazanyan and Nikolai Kazaryan will leave the team. At the end of the year, Levon Ishtoyan and Sergey Poghosyan will join them. “Recently, the game of extreme forwards has been discussed again. I am for playing on the flanks. But without a pronounced flank player,” Victor Maslov explained in a peculiar way the reason for excommunication from the team of Kazarian and Ishtoyan and, clarifying his thought, continued: “ I am for the game sharp, explosive, when the same football player is not constantly on the edge, but when different players appear here in a timely and unexpected manner. We watched on television how space ships set off. A powerful explosion, rockets take off at an unusual speed. And they don’t have wings. Yes, yes, those same wings that we perceive from childhood as an indispensable attribute of flight. "

Evaluating the results of the first round (the team was then in second place), Nikita Simonyan wrote: "Today, Ararat demonstrates a tendency to play the game without pronounced wingers. Such an adjustment is dictated by serious motives, and Ararat's coach V. Maslov , of course, it is clearer than many others how to use the available forces, based on the real state and sports form of one or another of its players, how to build a game. The trump cards of Yerevan remain the same - skillful possession of the ball, ingenuity. The game of the team is distinguished by entertainment "Ararat", as they say, looks, although, of course, not in all matches. It is interesting to introduce Hovhannisyan into the main team, a technical rock player who sees the field, combinational. Mirzoyan strengthened the line of defense. They continue to play a leading role in Ararat "Markarov and Andriasyan. They act subtly and intelligently on the field and skillfully direct their partners."

Yes, thanks to the June breakthrough (8 out of 8!) "Ararat" moved to the second line in the championship table. In the matches with "Zorya" and "Pakhtakor", won by Yerevan with a score of 2:0, Markarov scored a goal, and in both cases after Nazar Petrosyan's crosses. "Ararat" is behaving boldly, which is confirmed by the distribution of points scored and, most importantly, by the nature of the game, Lev Filatov noted. - I saw his game in Leningrad with Zenit in the last round and the other day in Moscow with Torpedo. He won the first - 2:1. In the second - a draw. In both cases, "Ararat" played to win, and did not consider itself obliged to defend away from "Hrazdan". But his opponents - and the "Zenith" and "Torpedo" - from among those in dire need of points and would hardly have missed the opportunity to "profit" by playing at home. In the game, "Zenith", as it seemed to me, was discouraged by the fact that visitors "behave badly" and do not take their place near their gates. Faced with the need to defend for the most part, the Leningraders did not manage to show how they build the game in general, what they are capable of, and acted as they had to.

In the match "Torpedo" - "Ararat" a magnificent goal was scored in all respects, and it's impossible not to say about it. The combination was played wide and fast. Markarov from the middle of the field threw the ball to the left flank of Petrosyan, he went forward and shot along the gate, Andriasyan, having already run past the ball, somehow reversed his movement, froze, turned around and slightly rolled the ball back to the running Hovhannisyan, who hit on the move into the corner and under the crossbar. At that moment, it was impossible not to remember that the yellow-and-green colors that Ararat was wearing were the colors of the Brazilian national team."

Unfortunately, high-level games alternated with failures, and as a result, Ararat ended up in fifth place, just like last year. “In order to become true to the tactics of the time, the Yerevan “Ara-rat” had to undergo a serious restructuring last season,” Viktor Maslov summed up the year. “It was necessary to abandon the old-fashioned game with extreme forwards, without weakening the flank attacks. having, besides Markarov, clearly pronounced forwards of the modern type, we used players of a new type in the middle line. The main tactical subtlety of "Ararat", which made his game unlike the game of other teams, was that two such masters, how Andriasyan and Markarov, in tactical terms, acted unusually, changed places according to their feelings, depending on one or another development of game episodes.

In the championship of the 75th year, Markarov scored 10 goals and 4  already described. The remaining six he led against Dynamo Moscow (after an individual pass), SKA Rostov (one in each circle), Zenit Leningrad and the Moscow teams Torpedo, Lokomotiv, CSKA. Markarov scored two goals from 11 meters (SKA, CSKA), although before that he had not been engaged in this thankless task in Ararat.

Chief football statistician Konstantin Yesenin noted: “For the past four years, the only troublemaker was the “last of the Mohicans” Eduard Markarov. on the fifth. Markarov is going to hang up his boots on a carnation. It's a pity. In 1975, he scored 15 goals at the expense of the Club, and the same number remained to the "most-my-most" peak ... "

The 15 goals indicated by Yesenin included five goals scored by Markarov against the Cypriot "Anarto-sis" in the European Cup Winners' Cup. The Yerevan match with the Cypriots was held with the overwhelming advantage of "Ararat" and ended in a rout - 9:0! The return game was no longer of interest and ended in a draw - 1:1.

In the 1/8 finals "Ararat" was expected by the formidable "West Ham". In the first match in Yerevan, the home team quickly took possession of the territory and laid siege to the English gates. At the gates of Day, one after another, acute situations began to arise. Hovhannisyan and Gevorkyan did not use excellent chances. A few more minutes pass and after a strong and accurate blow of the same Oganesyan, only Day's excellent reaction saves the British.

The Yerevanians completely dominate the field. They do not give opponents a break. And here again a dangerous moment at the gates of the guests, but Petrosyan's blow only shakes the crossbar. Ours clearly lacked luck. After another unused scoring chance, Ararat goalkeeper Norik Demirchyan, who was sitting next to the journalists, exclaimed: “I don’t remember the second such match: having so many opportunities and not scoring is rare. Old Hottabych must be an Englishman.”

Guests spent the entire match on the defensive. Their main task, apparently, was to neutralize Markarov and Andriasyan. They tried to cut this feigned, strong bond. The English did not succeed, as there were too many scoring chances at their gates. It is not known how the meeting would have ended if the only aimed shot made by Taylor in the 56th minute on Abrahamyan's goal had not reached the goal.

Now the defenders of Yerevan have gone forward. The ball was thrown at half of the British, but did not climb into their gates. When labor balls do not climb into the goal, ridiculous ones usually fly in. The goalkeeper of the British, after a scored goal, clearly began to drag out time. In one of these episodes, he picturesquely stopped in the goalkeeper's area and began to throw the ball from hand to hand. Samvel Petrosyan quietly crept up behind him (who played the whole match with "excellent") and at the moment when Day lost control of the ball for a split second, he knocked it out, and then scored into the goal in a fall with his head.

West Ham head coach John Layola spoke highly of the game of Yerevan: "I was especially surprised by the high technique of Ararat, the ability to control the ball without looking at it. Your team could play successfully in the English Championship. I don't like curtsy and speak from souls: whatever the outcome of the match, it was a pleasure for us to play with such a team."

And in the second match in London, "Ararat" offered a high pace due to the rapid movements of the attackers and short passes. "West Ham" sought to play the game more slowly, long passes leading forward flanking forwards. In the first half, the British succeeded in their plan, and they scored two goals. The second half began with furious attacks of "Ararat". The residents of Yerevan are picking up the pace and seizing the initiative. A swift attack follows, and Markarov scores a beautiful goal. This combination was carried out so spectacularly that even the most fanatical West Ham fans applauded. But the French judge Ellies, after consulting with his assistants, did not count him, which caused smiles and laughter in the stands. Nevertheless, the Yerevan team managed to realize their advantage in this half-off of the game: in the 48th minute, after Andriasyan's pass, Nazar Petrosyan sent the ball into the top nine of the English goal. And if it were not for the referee's mistake (it was not the last in the match), the score would have become equal - 2:2.

In those minutes, "Ararat" played in his usual fast technical manner. The hosts were forced to go on the defensive. Even Taylor began to act as a real defender. It is difficult to say how the match would have ended if the referees had not made another mistake. Coleman received the ball while offside. Followed by a pass to Taylor, who was behind the defenders of "Ararat" - the judges did not react in any way, and as a result, the third goal was scored, which finally tilted the scales towards the home team. Mistakes judges later recognized coaches of “West Ham”.

John Layola stressed that he does not consider this win easy: "Yerevans stand out for their excellent technique, speed, ability to play attacking football. However, they do not fully use these qualities necessary for modern football, which is most likely due to insufficient experience in participating in international tournaments and, as a result, problems in psychological preparation".

... At the end of the year, Markarov was included in the list of "33 best" (for the third time) football players in the country. Journalists did not deprive him of attention when they determined the best football players of the Union in 1975. Ahead of Markarov were only five Kyivans and two Muscovites. But among the residents of Yerevan, Eduard, who scored 18 points, was the first. Another Ararat resident Arkady Andriasyan scored 5 points in this poll.

The formidable scorer and virtuoso conductor turned 33 years old. Age of Christ. And he firmly decided that this was his last season. “I think,” said Eduard Markarov, “that artists and football players should leave the stage on time. Why give a “rooster”? Let the audience remember better how you sang in a clear voice.

There are such difficult games, after which you want to quit everything. I won't say I'm tired though. On the contrary, I feel light - I went, however, to a little trick: I reduced my weight by 3 kg. And, of course, I sacredly honor the regime. But speed, speed! It may not be so noticeable to the eye, but sometimes I feel: an extra second would not hurt.

Yes, and injuries stuck. I always got it. They did not spare, they beat. Not only was he removed, he didn’t even have a “mustard-nickname”. But what of that? Many bone-breakers carried out, as it were, a special task of their "tutors", and tried to take me out of the game. It came to curiosities. I even remember how I tried to persuade one of these "vis-a-vis" to have mercy. In response, I heard - "it will not be yet." In the second half, when he ran into me again, I deftly dodged, so much so that the rude man was seriously injured. In a word, everything happened. I could still play, bringing some benefit to the team, but I know that my own game would no longer please me. When you lose speed, you have to be on the move all the time in order to start not from a place, but to be on the move. This is also necessary for young people, for those who have a starting spurt that is not so hot. But like in the final, I can't play all the time. And worse, I don't want to.

The season as a whole went well, because there were no injuries. Every year there were injuries, but not a single one. As if on purpose, fate tempted me - well, try another year, but no, I won’t give in, it’s decided. Sleepless nights and thoughts that in his youth he could have played better? I already had a lot of such no-whose.

Ten years in "Neftyanik" and five in "Ararat" flew by unnoticed. This time will forever remain, like a wide and bright streak in life. I only regret about one thing - I didn’t manage to really play in the national team.

It's getting harder and harder to score in football every year. Even Blokhin's figure is not very high, although he is the main slaughterer among the people of Kiev. Buryak, Muntyan, Veremeev, Konkov - almost the entire middle line scored almost nothing, everything was created for the forwards. And I had to co-create in the first place. If we talk about age: has it become more difficult for me to score now? Difficult - because you lose speed, easier - because you have gained experience. It was difficult for me this year, because I had to understand the newcomers, support them and help them. If we had such a relationship with someone else, as with Andriasyan, we could have scored more goals.

I consider Blokhin, Lovchev, Andriasyan the best this year. Although ... no, all this is very conditional. Well, how to compare scorer and goalkeeper? Blokhin now largely determines the game of Kyiv "Dynamo". It used to be, about two years ago, he acted more as if on his own. Now he has team tasks in the first place, and the people of Kiev can build the game this way and not otherwise, precisely because they have Blokhin. Let's remember the matches with "Bayern" - our spring in the Champions Cup and their Super Cup. The general drawing is about the same, but we did not have Blokhin. He is equally strong in counterattacks when his team is leading a massive offensive. Therefore, the people of Kiev are not afraid to go on the defensive, even if for a long time - sooner or later Oleg will have his say.

This season I really liked Konkov, mainly as a defender. I don't think we've ever had a Libero like this before. Such a player, by the way, also determines the face of the team.

As for the goalkeepers, then, apparently, it was not by chance that Prokhorov and Astapovsky were noted after the season. They were in the public eye, because they saved their unsuccessfully played teams. So it turns out that everyone notices forwards among the leaders, and goalkeepers among weaker teams.

Thank you all very much. And the coaches with whom I had to work, and the journalists who criticized and supported me, and all the fans.

Now I want to work with children at a football school. To live at home, without these continuous trips. For 15 years, he saw his family in fits and starts. Looking forward to relaxing evenings at home. And with the same impatience - morning meetings with young football players. Here I will check to what extent it is possible to transfer technical skills to them, what role demonstration and prompting play, up to what age they are most receptive. In my opinion, it is necessary to know. And then ... then I want to try myself as a coach of a team of masters.

... Counting Markar's goals. Starting with "Oilman":

- USSR championships - 88 goals;

- matches for the USSR Cup - 6;

– international friendly meetings – 31

TOTAL: 125 goals

Then we move on to "Ararat":

- USSR championships - 41 goals;

- matches for the USSR Cup - 10;

- European Cup matches - 12;

– international friendly meetings – 14

TOTAL: 77 goals

Speaking as part of the Soviet national teams, he scored five goals, and in total, Eduard Markarov scored 207 goals. If we add here the balls scored by Eduard in unofficial matches of club teams and national teams, then I am sure that his track record will include at least 300 goals. Which of these goals is the most favorite, memorable for Eduard Markarov?

“A goal is a miracle, it’s a striker’s happiness,” the famous footballer answered this question. “Is there one miracle more wonderful than another? Every goal is equally dear to me.”

Finishing the story about Markarov the football player, one cannot help but refer to the essay by Lev Filatov from his collection "Forwards":

"Markarov's place in football is the line where tastes diverge. It is invisible. Those who are on the sides, at times, under the pressure of fluctuations in the situation, step over it, making forced concessions. But not for long, then they each diverge into their own half. Football is studied down and across, all its many components are known. Both a bad game and a good one, and a victory, and a defeat are immediately overgrown with a thousand arguments, any of which has the right to exist. However, universal erudition is unable to cope with sympathy for one or another player, The forward scores, he is the soul of the team, and someone stubbornly says: “I don’t like it, it’s not my taste ...” The team plays beautifully, dexterously, is in the lead, and again a voice is heard : "Not serious, unreliable, lightweight, but ..." Even if you break, you won't prove anything, taste, after all, it characterizes not only the subject of the dispute, but also the disputants themselves.

Fate was favorable to Markarov. The son of Artem Markarov, a well-known Baku football player, from the first childhood steps he found himself in the enchanting world of the game: family, yard, stadium, where his father worked as a coach. And everything worked out for the boy in love with the ball. Everything that can be done alone, he learned from childhood. B. Arkadiev noticed him as a youth and took him to Neftchi, taught him lessons in playing with partners, and appointed him to the center forward. And again everything began to work out. Nearby was Yuri Kuznetsov, one of the outstanding dispatchers, a man endowed not only with tactical intelligence and a perfect pass, but also with paternal care for the front line players.

Later, Markarov, when Banishevsky became the center forward in Neftchi, and Kazbek Tuaev was on the flank, and he himself experienced the pleasure of playing in the style of Kuznetsov. But Markarov, unlike Kuznetsov, was constantly attracted to the gates, he was never content with the role of playing along, all his wanderings, maneuvers, feints ended in a jerk and a blow.

Then, as usual, he began to notice sidelong glances on himself: "It's not the same anymore, 29 ..." And he moved to Ararat.

This club is of the same style as "Neftchi", technical, combinational, and Markarov felt himself in it like a fish in water. But there was also a difference. "Ararat", having experienced the influence of coaches A. Ponomarev, N. Glebov, N. Simonyan, comprehended the science of team, strong-willed play and gradually took the lead. Markarov was lucky again with attacking partners: Arkady Andriasyan, Levon Ishtoyan, Nikolai Kazaryan, Oganes Zanazanyan - all in their prime, all eager to show themselves, all the “techies”, and even the tactics of Moscow coaches who have gone through the school. Markarov was the eldest among them. It suited him, and so did they. He played a game that met with complete understanding. Together with Ararat, Markarov became the champion, won the Cup twice, and most importantly, he played in front of everyone, then everyone liked the team.

Even in the most concise summary, the biography is nowhere better. After all, Markarov not only shone, played, made an impression, conquered the audience - he also brought evidence against which it is not customary to argue: 129 goals in the national championships is the sixth (!) result in our football.

Despite all this, Markarov had half the confession. No one questioned his skill with the ball, they agreed that he was one of the virtuosos. Maybe he overdid it, flirted? In no case. All his graceful tricks with the ball flickered like sparks, exactly as much as needed, measured, as in a pharmacy, for a general game, for an attack, in order to score a goal. Did he see the field? Still, seer, what few! The ball passed from him like a fan, he did not lose sight of the slightest opportunity. Did he have the strength? His goals are only part of the answer. He managed everywhere, made fearless acrobatic jumps, rushed into martial arts, to the rescue of a gaping partner. He was one of those who do not consider their movements, do not save.

What, then, prevented him from being in the "classics", along with G. Fedotov, Paichadze, Beskov, Streltsov, Dementiev, Ivanov, Simonyan, Gogoberidze? Why did they pass by him, forming the national team?

An honest answer would seem strange, which is why they hush it up, although it exists: it didn’t grow. How simple - 164 centimeters, and a refusal. There is no right to such a refusal, and there are no reasonable arguments. But there is a "taste". And nothing will help here. Whatever arguments, examples, analogies you give, you will come across a grin: "All this is fine, but if we lose, they will say:" Whom did they recruit? What kind of kindergarten? We need athletes. You have to climb, push, not slap, "and they will remove me for not understanding how to form a team." That's what the coach will say. And not all fans will accept the "baby". In an extreme case, they will be merciful: "We have nothing, let him play, but he has nothing to do in the international arena."

I strongly suspect that in the case of Markarov, the reference to growth helped out those who did not give him a go. For a certain category of people, he played too subtly. You can't assign any partners to someone like Markarov, confusion will begin. It is necessary that the rest be a match for him, and this is perestroika, a change of views, concepts ... Why be smart? Better simpler, stronger, with a guarantee against defeat. True, no guarantees for a cool game. This is how unsophisticated tastes rule.

And Markarov himself did everything to be remembered as a rare master."
